Elmira Scores Big; Ithaca Rallies; Canton Splits

ELMIRA 11, Oneonta 4
The Elmira College baseball team (3-27) scored a program-best 11 runs en route to an 11-4 victory over Oneonta State (7-23) today. Mike Burghardt '18 led offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run today.
 
Rey Colon '18 had three hits and two runs while Dylan Bellinger '18 hit his second career home run today. Davis Salzman '18 pitched the first six innings of the game and struck out two batters to post his first career win.
 
With the bases loaded in the first inning, Bellinger reached on a fielder's choice to score Hayden Rothenberg '17. Colon also took advantage of an error to cross the plate and give the Purple and Gold a 2-0 lead. Later that inning, Conor Bawiec '18 walked on a passed ball while an error on the play also scored Bellinger to put EC up, 3-0.
 
Bellinger added to Elmira's lead in the fourth inning when he homered over the left field wall to put the Soaring Eagles up, 4-0. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Bryce Plante '18, Harrison Leslie '18, and Dennis Rudolph '18 all walked to put give the Soaring Eagles a  7-0 advantage.
 
Rothenberg then filed out to centerfield to send Plante home for EC's eighth run of the game. Colon then reached on an error to load the bases for Burghardt. Burghardt then stepped up to the plate and singled through the right side to score both Leslie and Rudolph, putting Elmira up, 10-0.
 
Oneonta put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning to trail, 10-2. Nate Hanner '18 flew out to right field in the top of the seventh that scored Colon to put EC's 11th run on the board. The Red dragons put two more runs on the board before Elmira won, 11-4.
 

ITHACA 6, Oswego 4
The Ithaca College baseball team used a five-run ninth inning to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 victory at Oswego on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Ithaca improves its record to 14-13 on the season, while dropping Oswego to 24-9.

In the ninth, sophomore Trevor Thompson led off with a single and junior Stephen Yanchus followed with another base hit. After a pitching change, junior Zach Cole notched the third straight hit to load the bases, which set up sophomore Ryan Henchey for a two-run single down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and then freshman Domenic Boresta beat out on infield hit and pushed classmate Ryan Dougherty home to knot the game up at 4-4. A sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Cooper Belyea put the Bombers ahead as Henchey crossed home and Boresta came around to score on a double from senior Christian Brown to secure the win.

Senior Jimmy Wagner stepped in to close the game out and fanned two batters in the bottom of the ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Freshman Tyler Hill earned the win in a perfect inning of relief, while senior Zach Dickstein tossed seven solid innings in a starting role. Dickstein surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits, a walk and three hit batters, but also struck out two Lakers.

Oswego built a 3-0 lead after three innings before the Bombers got on the board in the fourth on a solo homerun from Thompson. The Lakers got that run back in the seventh before Ithaca's break-out inning in the ninth.

Thompson went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored, while Cole batted 2-for-4. Brown also collected two hits in five trips to the plate.


CANTON
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) drove in two runs and John Mancini (Scotia, NY) earned his second win in three days as the baseball team earned a split with visiting SUNY Poly on Tuesday. The Wildcats (14-12) took the opener 8-5 before the Roos (11-27) bounced back with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Game 1
SUNY Poly put together a big inning bring across six runs in the second on a pair of 2 RBI singles as well as a pair of RBI base hits. The Wildcats added one run each in the fifth and seventh for their eight runs.

The Roos plated three runs in the sixth on a Seth Douglas(Reedsburg, WI) 2 RBI double to right center scoring Nazario-Cruz and Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, FL). Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) followed with an RBI single to left to score Douglas.

SUNY Canton added a pair of runs in the seventh on another 2 RBI double from Douglas to score Nazario-Cruz andMatt Hall (Palmyra, NY) but the comeback bid fell short.

Derek Harkin (Ottawa, ON) got the start on the mound throwing 1.2 innings giving up six earned runs. Zach Lawrence(West Palm Beach, FL) threw 4.1 innings in relief without giving up an earned run, while Douglas gave up one earned on two hits in one inning.

Game 2
The Wildcats plated one run in the first inning of the nightcap on an RBI single. The Roos took a 2-1 lead on a Nazario-Cruz 2 RBI single to left in the third. He scored Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) and Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) on the play.

SUNY Poly tied the game at two on an RBI single to center in the fourth but the Roos answered right back to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Matos led off with a walk and Nazario-Cruz sent Matos over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Douglas followed with a single to left to put runner at the corners with one down. Douglas took off to steal second and got caught in a run-down and was eventually tagged out, but Matos broke for the plate and scored what would be the eventual game-winning run.

Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) got the no-decision on the mound giving up two earned with four strike outs in four innings. Mancini was dominant pitching the fifth and sixth innings in relief giving up just one hit and striking out two. Robbie Osterer (Ottawa, ON) struck out the side in the seventh to earn his second save of the season.


Hamilton 6, UTICA 1
The Utica College baseball team lost 6-1 Tuesday against local rival Hamilton College at the UC Baseball Field.  
 
The Pioneers fall to 17-13 overall and need just four more wins to tie the most victories in a season in over 24 years.  The 1991 Pioneers went 21-8 under Head Coach Don Guido.  
 
UC returns to action Wednesday as it welcomes Keuka College to the UC Baseball Field for an afternoon twin bill.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
Hamilton moves its overall record to 14-10 on the season and returns to the diamond Friday as it travels to Middletown, CT to face Wesleyan.
 
The Continentals worked a 2-0 lead over the first two innings of play on a combined three hits and one UC error. Hamilton's leadoff Joe Jensen singled to start the game then stole second and third before scoring on a sac fly. In the second, Chris Collins led off with a double and scored on an errant throw by Utica's catcher as Collin attempted to steal third.
 
HC added another run in the fifth moving to a 3-0 lead before the Pioneers got on the board.
 
UC posted its first and only run of the contest in the seventh as Bryce Patterson (Corning, NY/Corning East) scored on an error by Hamilton's shortstop.
 
The visitors put up three more scores in the top of the ninth as they took a 6-1 lead and the eventual victory.
 
The two teams meet again on Wednesday May 6th in Clinton, NY for the 28th Annual Jackie Robinson Game at the Royce Field.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
 
Utica's Ethan Bliss (Cooperstown, NY /Cooperstown) got the start and had a solid outing as he tossed seven innings allowing seven hits and just three runs (two earned) while fanning four.
 
Patterson, Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) and Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) scattered UC's only three hits of the game.
