Cornelius Successfully-Defends State Title In Decathlon

For the second straight year, St. John Fisher College's Devin Cornelius of the men's track and field team has won the decathlon at the NYSCTC Championships.  The junior tallied 6,053 points over the two-day event at University of Rochester's Fauver Stadium, placing first in four the 10 events.

After posting a time of 17.41 seconds in the 110-hurdles, Cornelius came through with a toss of 27.23 meters in the discus.  He won the pole vault, clearing 4.15 meters and finished in the top half in the javelin (36.95 meters).  He closed out the day with a time of 4:49.16 in the 1,500, edging out Rochester's Patrick Rice, who finished with 6,000 points.

Alfred freshman Seth Spicer finished fourth as he scored a total of 5,603 points in the two-day event.
 
On Monday, Spicer competed in the 110-meter hurdles (16.68 seconds, second-fastest in the field), the discus (31.63 meters, second-best in the field), the pole vault (3.05 meters), the javelin (31.01 meters) and the 1,500-meter run (4:31.93, second-fasted in the field).
 
On Sunday, Spicer competed in the 100-meter dash (11.94 seconds), the long jump (6.09 meters), the shot put (11.67 meters), the high jump (1.64 meters) and the 400-meter dash (52.96 seconds).

Ithaca freshmen Seth Abbott and Tyler Denn-Thiele competed for the Bombers.
 
Abbott earned 5,417 points in the decathlon to take sixth.  Abbott ranked third in the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw and 1,500-metr run. He completed the hurdles in 17.45 seconds, reached 27.6 meters in the discus and clocked a time of 4:32.38 in the 1,500-meter run. Abbot took fourth in the javelin with a distance of 43.18 meters and cleared a height of 3.25 meters in the pole vault.
 
Denn-Thiele tallied 4,343 points over the two-day championship to finish eighth. He reached 3.75 meters in the pole vault to place third overall. Denn-Thiele clocked a high-hurdles time of 21.71 seconds and ran a time of 4:45.62 in the 1,500-meter. In the throwing events, Denn-Thiele reached 19.67 meters in the discus and hit a mark of 34.54 meters with the javelin.
