Elmira Downs Alfred; Stevens Wins in OT Over Ithaca
ELMIRA 15, ALFRED 5
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (1-8, 1-5 E8) raced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, defeating Alfred University (1-5, 0-3 E8) 15-5 for their first win of the 2015 season.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 and
Ashton Hogan '15 each scored five goals with Hogan adding an assist, while
Lindsay Wargo '17 made six saves in the win. Both Spoljaric and Hogan, with their performances, reached career milestones only a handful of other Elmira College women's lacrosse players have been able to achieve.
Spoljaric, who was recognized for scoring her 100th career point yesterday against Nazareth College, entered today's contest with 99 career goals, one shy of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career goals. The junior from Saugerties, NY wasted little time in accomplishing that feat as she scored the game's first goal just 29 seconds in.
Hogan is herself nearing 100 career goals, but the milestone she eyed today was the 100-point mark as she began the game needing just one point to join the 100-point club. Hogan's accomplishment also took little time as she tallied her 100th point by assisting on Spoljaric's, and EC's, second goal of the contest after just 40 seconds elapsed on the game clock. Hogan also joined the 100-point club in ice hockey earlier this year and becomes the first women's ice hockey and women's lacrosse player to record 100 career points in both sports.
Spoljaric, with two goals under her belt, added a third within the first 1:08 of the game to give Elmira a lead that they would not relinquish. The scoring was subdued for the next nine-plus minutes, but Hogan, while in a man-up situation, would score her first of five goals, giving EC a 4-0 lead.
The Saxons finally got on the board with 17:21 to play in the first half, but goals from Spoljaric and Hogan extended the Purple and Gold's lead to 6-1. Assisting on the goals were
Kyra McDonald '18 and
Kylie Connell '17. For McDonald, the assist is the first point of her career. Alfred got a second goal from Miranda Gilbert with 10:42 remaining in the opening half, but the final 10-plus minutes were dominated by the Soaring Eagles as they closed the half with four straight goals to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.
Marissa Mongillo '15 got into the scoring column with the first of the four goals, then added a second score with 3:03 on the clock. Mongillo's goals sandwiched Spoljaric's fifth goal of the half, and Connell closed the opening stanza with a goal with 40 seconds to play.
Hogan started the second half scoring back-to-back unassisted goals, including a man-up goal, to put EC up 12-2. Then, with 16:22 left in regulation time, Jordyn Rouselle '18 brought Elmira's 7-0 scoring run to an end with the first goal of her career.
Alfred found the found the back of the net to score their third goal of the game with 14:40 left in the second half. Hogan responded by scoring her fifth goal of the game 1:35 later after receiving the ball from Rousselle.
The Saxons then scored two straight goals before
Sahriah Waters '18 got the ball over to
Sarah Hughson '18 who scored to give the EC women a 15-5 lead. Waters tallied the first career point of her career while Hughson scored the first goal of her career on the play.
STEVENS 14, ITHACA 13 (OT)
Junior
Erika Wilcox scored 23 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team a 14-13 double overtime victory over Ithaca College on Saturday.
It was the team's first victory over the Bombers since a 10-9 triumph on May 8, 2011.
The two sides traded the first 10 goals of the contest before Ithaca scored the next two goals thanks to sophomore Morgan Cadwell and junior Riley Marion. The Ducks answered back with a goal by senior
Caitlyn Hughes with 55 ticks remaining in the opening half.
Marion scored two goals in the opening 4:01 of the second half to reopen a three goal advantage, but Hughes tallied her second and third goals of the game to cut the Bombers lead to one. Cadwell and senior Natalie Lang potted a goal each with just under 14 minutes left to give the hosts a three goal cushion. The Ducks (8-1, 4-0 Empire 8) went on a 4-0 run behind goals from Wilcox, freshman
Julianna Ricci and a pair from freshman
Cami Santor to give the visitors a one goal lead with 1:03 left. However the Bombers (4-6, 2-2 Empire 8) got a goal from Cadwell with 11 seconds on the clock to tie the game and force overtime.
In the first overtime, Wilcox notched her third goal of the contest 50 seconds in to give the Ducks the lead. However Ithaca took advantage of a yellow card and junior Ally Runyon scored with the man advantage to knot the score. Wilcox took the draw control in the second overtime and maneuvered her way down the field to score the game-winner just 23 ticks into the sudden-victory period.
The Ducks were outshot 30-28 but collected a 17-13 edge in draw controls. Wilcox and Hughes each netted four goals and an assist with Wilcox chipping in four ground balls and eight shots. Junior
Kathleen Kalbian had four draw controls and four shots and Ricci led the way with four caused turnovers. Freshman
Stephanie Schnelzer had eight saves in 36:23 of action in recording the win.
Cadwell had five goals and a team high eight shots while Marion had three goals and four ground balls. Freshman Kimberly Presuto had seven saves in the defeat.
