E8 Athletes of the Week: April 6
Weather was once again a factor to be dealt with as some snow and plenty of rain feel causing some schedule changes, but E8 athletes came through with flying colors on the days that were playable. Those who earned weekly honors include...
Baseball Player – Ithaca
Josh Savacool, Sophomore, Second Baseman – Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker
Sophomore Josh Savacool led Ithaca to a 5-0 week with a .643 average in 14 at bats. Savacool also drove in seven runs, scored five times and stole two bases. He notched three doubles and a triple to round out his slugging percentage at 1.000 for the week. Savacool was also perfect in the field on 19 chances.
Baseball Pitcher – Utica
Joshua Webb, Junior –Verona, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill
Joshua Webb pitched a complete game shutout and allowed just three hits, while striking out 11, in the Pioneers 8-0 victory over Elmira College on Saturday. He threw 93 pitches, secured six ground outs and three fly outs. Eleven strike outs matched his season-high.
Softball Player – Alfred
Liz Thompson, Sophomore, Third Base – Horseheads, NY/Horseheads
Liz Thompson batted .857 (12-for-14) as the Saxons swept home doubleheaders from RIT and Medaille. She had two doubles and a triple, scored nine runs and drove in four. She was also 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts. She raised her season average 114 points, from .500 to .614.
Softball Pitcher – Ithaca
Laura Quicker, Junior – West Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist
Junior Laura Quicker went 2-1 this past week for the Bombers, pitching three complete games in the process. She recorded an 0.86 ERA over 24.1 innings pitched, holding batters to a .179 batting average over that stretch. She picked up 16 strikeouts while allowing just three earned runs.
Men’s Lacrosse Player – Nazareth
Troy Haefele, Junior, Attack – Greene, ME/St. Dominic Regional
Troy Haefele led the Golden Flyers to two more victories last week as he totaled 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. He had 10 points on six goals and four assists in a 17-1 win over Utica. He added five points on two goals and three assists in a 15-3 win at Hartwick.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – Houghton
Josh Haingray, Senior – Houghton, NY/Houghton Academy
In the Highlanders only game of the week, against Elmira College, Josh Haingray made 25 saves and only allowed 14 goals. He saved 64.1 percent of the 39 shots on goal.
Women's Lacrosse Player – Stevens
Erika Wilcox, Junior, Attack/Midfield – Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker
In two games this week, Wilcox netted nine goals and two assists with 16 shots, six ground balls and six draw controls. Against Rowan, she scored a team high five five goals on eight shots with three draw controls in a 13-9 victory over the Profs. Her first goal of the game marked the 100
th goal of her Stevens career. In a 14-13 double-OT thriller against Ithaca, the Baldwinsville, N.Y. native scored four goals, including the go-ahead goal in the first overtime and the game-winner just 23 seconds into the second overtime period.
Women's Lacrosse Goalie – Utica
Kells Casey, Junior – Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union
Goalie Kells Casey made seven saves and allowed three goals in 51:14 of work as the Pioneers cruised to a 19-4 win over Keuka on Thursday.
Men’s Tennis Player– Ithaca
Chris Hayes, Junior – Rochester, NY/Brighton
Chris Hayes had two doubles wins and a singles win for Ithaca in two Empire 8 dual-matches. Against Utica he won 6-1, 6-2 at third singles and teamed with Nate Wolf for an 8-0 victory at second doubles. Against nationally –ranked Stevens, he partnered with Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos for a 9-7 win at second doubles.

Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete – St. John Fisher
Joe D’Agostino, Junior - Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima
Joe D’Agostino set a new school record in the 200 meter dash (22.33) at the Colonial Relays to finish in 21st place among Division I, II, and III competition to qualify for ECACs. He also helped the 4 x 100 relay team set a new school record of 43.45 to qualify for ECACs and finish in 14th place.
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete – St. John Fisher
Mark VanMarter, Freshman – Syracuse, NY/Liverpool
Mark VanMarter picked up right where he left off after the indoor season, jumping to a seventh place finish and setting a new school record in the Championship heat at the Colonial Relays with a mark of 7.12 meters, also qualifying him for ECACs. He qualified for ECAC’s in the triple jump with a mark of 13.23 meters to finish 11th. VanMarter also placed fourth in the University heat of the high jump at 1.89.
Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete - Alfred
Miasia Hillman, Senior – Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech
Senior Miasia Hillman won the 100-yard dash (12.76 seconds) and 200-yard dash (25.84) at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational on Saturday.
Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Utica
Sarah Wiatr, Junior – Poland, NY/West Canada Valley
Sarah Wiatr contributed 15 of the Pioneers' 31 total points at the University of Rochester Invite on Thursday. Wiatr opened up her spring campaign with a victory in the triple jump gathering 10 points with a soar of 11.51 meters. Wiatr also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.26 meters as she added five more points for the Utica women.
