Highlanders Take Two from Keuka College

The Houghton College baseball team won 9-1 in game one and 9-4 in game two of Monday's doubleheader against the Keuka College Wolf Pack.

In game one the Wolf Pack jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Brian Colbert hit a RBI single up the middle.

The Highlanders came right back in the top of the second. Patrick Parsons (Wellsboro, PA, Wellsboro) led off the inning with a single to center field. Then Trenton Unverdorben (Portville, NY, Portville) walked and Garret Kirkpatrick (York, PA, Central York) hit a single to load the bases. Tage Johnson (Jamestown, NY, Frewsburg) came to the plate and hit a two RBI double over the centerfielder's head to give the Highlanders a one run lead. Enrico Sukhdeo (Georgetown, Guyana, Ashbrook) watched four pitches and took a walk to load the bases for Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport). Knapp was hit by a pitch that allowed Kirkpatrick to score from third.

After a scoreless third the Highlanders scored a run in the fifth when Knapp hit a RBI triple into the gap in left center to give the Highlanders a 4-1 lead.

In the fifth the Johnson came through for the Highlanders again when he hit a two RBI single that scored Brett Rapan (Bolivar, NY, Bolivar-Richburg ) and Parsons.

The Highlanders added on three insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh Jared Knowlton (Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur ) sat the Wolf Pack down in order. Knowlton earned the win and pitched a complete game only allowing one earned run and three hits in seven inning of work.

The loss was handed to Keith Ryan.

In game two the Highlanders got on the board in the fourth. Unverdorben hit a triple. Rapan then singled to right field, which scored Unverdorben from third. Then with two outs Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada, Homeschool) was hit by a pitch, which put runners at first and second. Sukhdeo followed that with a base clearing triple to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.

The Wolf Pack came right back and scored two in the bottom half of the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth and sixth for the Highlanders the Wolf Pack took advantage of a Highlander throwing error and tied the game up at three.

In the top of the seventh Knapp led things off with a double. Then after a couple walked batters Unverdorben walked in a run and with the bases still juiced Tanner Hoffman (Kingston, ON, Canada, Holy Cross Secondary) hit an RBI single to center to score another run. The route was on the Highlanders batted around and scored six runs in the seventh to give them a 9-3 lead.

The Wolf Pack would score a run in the bottom half of the inning, but it was not enough.

Chad Muise (Brantford, ON, Canada, North Park Collegiate) earned his first win of the year for the Highlanders and Thomas Fowler was handed the loss.

The Highlanders are back in action Friday when they head to Elmira to take on the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College.
