Hawks Win at Mount St. Mary, 17-13

NEWBURGH, NY – Hartwick used a 10-4 run at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to open up an eight-goal lead in a 17-13 victory over Mount Saint Mary at Kaplan Field on Monday. The win snaps a three-game skid for the Hawks and improves their overall record to 3-6. The Knights fall to 4-5 with the loss.
           
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) led all players with five goals and one assist for the Hawks. Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) and Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) each scored three goals and dished out two assists.
             
Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) chipped in two goals and an assist and Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) had two tallies.
           
Mount scored first 50 seconds into the match but it would be its only lead of the night. Coons, Ference and Rosenberg tallied consecutive goals to hand the Hawks a 3-1 advantage. The Knights trimmed the gap to one twice but goals from Rosenberg and Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) would give the Hawks two-goal cushions. Coons would make it 6-3 with 10 minutes left in the half.
           
A Mount goal with under nine minutes to go made it a 6-4 game, but the Hawks closed the half with five goals in the final 6:17 for an 11-5 lead at halftime. Ference, Rosenberg, and Naja scored goals with Jweid adding the final two of the half.
           
Early in the second half, the Knights got within four, 11-7, with two straight goals. Rosenberg answered with two straight markers for Hartwick. At 20:43, Mount scored its eighth goal but Colleen Jones (Ardsley, NY/Hackley) answered 19 seconds later in a three-goal rally for the Hawks. Jweid and Naja registered the other two tallies and 'Wick was in front 16-8.
           
The Knights inched closer with two goals at 13:25 and 9:03. Coons then scored the Hawks' final goal at the 7:58 mark. Mount netted the next three goals to get the score to 17-13 with two minutes remaining but ran out of time in the loss.
           
Mount Saint Mary out-shot the Hawks 30-26 and earned more ground balls, 28-22. Both teams collected 16 draws.
           
Naja earned a team-high five ground balls for Hartwick. Coons and goalkeeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) each had three. Luce also made 11 saves in the Hawks' cage in 52 minutes of action. Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) made two stops in the final eight minutes.
           
Jweid grabbed a team-high four draws. Naja, Rosenberg, Alaina Jones (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd), and Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) each caused turnovers.
           
The Knights were paced offensively by Katie Gattoni, Claire Duffy, and Nicole Scicutella. All three players scored four goals. Carly Lennon and Emily Carboine combined for five saves.
           
Hartwick returns to action on Saturday, April 11 at Houghton College.
