Hartwick & Ithaca Net 12 Goals; Fisher Wins Big
HARTWICK 12, Cobleskill 4
Hartwick's men's lax team cruised to its first win of the season with a 12-4 victory over SUNY Cobleskill at Wright Stadium on Wednesday. Eight Hawks figured into the scoring.
The Hawks out-shot the Fighting Tigers by a wide margin, 52-19, in the match. They also won the ground ball battle 47-29 and caused a season-high 15 turnovers.
Cody Petillo registered four goals for the Hawks with
Matt McCallan adding a pair of goals and an assist.
Dylan Malloy and
David Bianculli each contributed two goals and
Roy Simmons chipped in with a goal and three assists.
The Hawks got off to a quick start scoring a pair of goals in the opening 1:35. McCallan got the game's first goal after 53 seconds and Petillo netted his first at 13:25 for a 2-0 Hartwick lead.
Petillo added his second goal off a Simmons' feed for a 3-0 edge before the Fighting Tigers got on the scoreboard with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter. Petillo and Simmons hooked up again on the man-advantage and the Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
Conner Long rang a shot in off the post 2:08 into the second period for a four-goal lead.
Sean Brown earned the assist on the play. Cobleskill got within three after a goal with under 10 minutes to go in the half, but Simmons tallied off a
Jacob Sasche helper at 8:04 and Malloy added Hartwick's seventh goal from McCallan for a 7-2 edge at the break.
The Fighting Tigers opened the scoring in the second half but the Hawks recorded three straight goals in the third for a 10-3 advantage. Petillo scored his team-leading thirteenth of the season and Bianculli netted back-to-back goals late in the period. Long and Simmons dished out assists on both of Bianculli's scores.
McCallan found the net for his second goal of the day 1:32 into the fourth. Cobleskill got its final goal of the game at 10:44 and Malloy closed out the scoring with 43 ticks to play.
David Meyers led the Fighting Tigers with a pair of goals and an assist. Anthony Yevoli and Troy Rossi also tallied.
Mike Rourke and
Sam Nowak combined for six saves in the Hawks' cage. Nicholas Goldberg made 16 stops for the Fighting Tigers.
Kyle Kickel earned a game-high six ground balls in the contest for the Hawks. McCallan and Hudson each contributed five ground balls. Hudson also won 11 face-offs.
ITHACA 12, Utica 5
The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team defeated the Utica Pioneers 12-5 on Wednesday, April 8, at the Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Ithaca improved its record to 9-3 on the season and 4-0 in the Empire 8, while Utica fell to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Utica stole an early lead, scoring at 12:47 in the first quarter. The Bombers responded back two minutes later on a shot by
Sean Ferrito, assisted by
James Manilla, to tie the game at 1.
John Januszkiewicz then sent a pass to
Jack Shumway, who put the ball in the back of Utica's net. Ithaca lead 2-1 with nine minutes left in the first quarter.
Utica tied the game, 2-2, with 6:15 left in the quarter. The Bombers countered to mark Januszkiewicz's first goal of the day, assisted by Shumway. Ferrito then extended Ithaca's lead with a goal, making the score 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
The Bombers held Utica to just one goal per quarter for the remainder of the game.
There were no score changes for the first 11 minutes of play in the second quarter. Ithaca scored once at 3:51, on a shot from Januszkiewicz. Utica sent one past the Ithaca defense before entering halftime. The score read 5-3 in favor of the Bombers at the half.
Ithaca scored four times in the third quarter.
Jack Shumway added two more goals, while freshman
Kaelan Fitzpatrick and Manilla each registered goals for Ithaca. Utica would score once, making the score 9-4 heading into the final quarter.
The score remained unchanged for the first seven minutes of play in the fourth quarter, until the Bombers went on a three-goal rally.
Jake Cotton recorded his first goal of the day, after converting on a feed from Manilla, with 8:08 left in the game. Shumway put away two more quick goals to increase Ithaca's lead 12-4. Cotton assisted the first goal and Manilla contributed on Shumway's final goal.
The Pioneers scored once more before the end of the game, making the score 12-5 in favor of Ithaca.
The Bombers edged the Pioneers 33-18 in shots and 23 to 19 in groundballs. Ithaca controlled the game at the X, winning 14-of-21 face-offs. Ithaca also earned a near-perfect clear percentage, successfully clearing 14-of-15 clear attempts.
Junior goalie
Scott Sidnam made five saves in the win.
Shumway paced the Bombers with five goals and two assists, marking career highs in goals and points. Ferrito and Januszkiewicz each recorded two goals and an assist. Manilla logged three assists and a goal against the Pioneers. Cotton added a goal and an assist, while Fitzpatrick registered a goal and Walker had an assist.
Matt Greenblatt scooped a team-best six groundballs and
Jimmy Ryan grabbed five.
Eli Gobrecht led the Bombers with three caused turnovers and four groundballs against Utica.
ST. JOHN FISHER 22, Houghton 4
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team raised its record to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference on Wednesday night, as the Cardinals came away with a 22-4 win over host Houghton College.
Fisher jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the opening quarter and pushed its advantage to 14-2 at the break.
In total, 12 different players scored for Fisher, led by Matt Collichia,who tallied a team-high four goals.
Nick Costello and
Tyler Mason each finished with three goals. Costello also added two assists.
Matthew Condon totaled two goals and one assist, while
Tyler Fort also scored twice.
Nick Rossi,
Devin Trifeletti,
Ricky Barton,
Dante Giordano and Robert Pertenzino also scored.
Scott Kershner led Fisher with three assists, while Barton, Rossi, Pertenzino,
Tim Wagner and
Kevin DeOrdio each recorded an assist.
DeOrdio and
Paul Cefalu led Fisher on the day with five ground balls. The Cardinals tallied a season-high 54 ground balls for the game. Cefalu was also a perfect 12-for-12 on faceoffs.
