Alfred, Ithaca and Houghton Win
ALFRED 13, Medaille 11
Senior
Kaitlyn Button led the Alfred University women's lacrosse team (2-5, E8 1-2) to a 13-11 win over Medaille College Wednesday evening, scoring seven goals in the contest.
Five Saxons scored in the close game, with sophomore
Megan Wendt and freshman
Miranda Gilbert (scoring two goals each. Senior
Aubrey Fry and junior
Brianna Dudick combined for a goal apiece.
AU was the first team to strike in the opening half when Button weaved her way to the goal, grabbing an unassisted score only 1:11 into the game. Medaille answered with three straight goals to swing the advantage in its favor, 3-1. Button would score two goals to knot the game up at three.
The Mavericks took the lead again, scoring three more times to get a slight cushion on the Saxons, 6-3. AU grabbed a goal soon after when Wendt hooked up with Dudick for the helper. The score marks Dudick's first of the season.
In the final minutes of the first half each team netted two goals. Within the chaos, Fry also added her first goal of the season for the Saxons. Going into the half the Mavericks led the Saxons, 8-6.
In the opening 5:16 of the second half Gilbert and Button rattled the cage for goals, tying the game at eight. Medaille would score a lone goal, attempting to take a final grasp on the game.
In the end, the Saxons were too much for the Mavericks, scoring five goals in ten minutes to take a sizable lead with only 13:59 to go in the game.
With 1:04 left in the bout, Medaille looked for one final push scoring twice before the clock ran out.
Freshman
Shannon Gray played 60 minutes in the goal for the Saxons, making nine saves. Seven of Gray's nine saves came in the second half to hold off the Mavericks.
ITHACA 12, William Smith 9
The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team staged a late second-half comeback and won 12-9 at William Smith on Wednesday evening. Ithaca trailed 9-8 with four minutes remaining in the game, but scored four times in the last 3:09 to earn the victory. Ithaca is 5-6 on the season and William Smith is 4-7.
Ithaca led 3-2 six minutes into the game, but William Smith tied it quickly thereafter and then took a lead that it maintained until Ithaca's comeback effort over the latter portion of the second half. The rally started with a goal by
Riley Marion with 14 minutes left and Ithaca trailed 9-8. That score remained until the very late stages of the second half. Ithaca tied the score 9-9 with a goal by
Niki Standera with 3:09 left.
Ally Runyon gave Ithaca a 10-9 advantage on a goal with 2:28 to play. With Ithaca holding a one-goal lead, a William Smith shot hit the post.
Natalie Lang added two insurance goals for Ithaca in the last minute to account for the final score.
Runyon and Lang scored three goals each for Ithaca. Standera and
Riley Marion each had two goals.
Morgan Cadwell and
Delaney Gilson scored once. Three of Ithaca's goals were assisted, as assists went to Runyon, Gilson and
Taylor Brady.
Kimberly Presuto started in goal for Ithaca and allowed eight goals with one save over approximately 31 minutes of action.
Kelsey Fee went in to the goal and allowed one goal and had two saves in the final 29 minutes. Fee earned her first victory as a college goalkeeper.
Ithaca forced eight William Smith turnovers, and Marion led the way in that category with three caused turnovers. Marion also had three ground balls, and five other players had two ground balls each. Marion had seven draw controls to help Ithaca in the possession game.
HOUGHTON 17, Hilbert 2
Four players registered hat tricks as Houghton women's lacrosse snared a 17-2 win at Hilbert College on Wednesday.
Houghton improved to 5-5 on the season with the win.
The Highlanders scored the game's first eight goals over a 13-minute span to start the game. Meghan Oswald, Tyler Reese and Jenny Zacchigna each scored twice during the run, with Ashley Popp and Chandler Jones also finding the back of the net. Hilbert got on the board with 15:28 to go in the half, before the visitors tallied four more goals, with Jones and Zacchigna each scoring and Elizabeth Westwood and Bethany Kuiken scoring one apiece.
Hilbert scored with 4:05 left in the half, but Westwood scored two more to give the Highlanders a 14-1 lead at the break.
The Highlanders would score three more times in the second half, with Oswald scoring twice and Reese adding her third of the game.
Houghton held a 38-13 advantage in shots and had a 25-17 edge in shots on goal.
Oswald led all scorers with four goals, while adding six draw controls. Reese, Zacchigna and Westwood each scored three goals. Jones added two goals and six assists.
Kourtnie Franklin made six stops in net.
