WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 9, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team blasted three home runs Thursday in 11-7 and 7-5 losses to Ramapo College at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
The losses dropped Stevens to 12-5-1 while Ramapo moved to 15-7.
Ramapo 11, Stevens 7
After a scoreless first inning, Ramapo took advantage of a pair of Stevens miscues with four runs in the top of the second. The Ducks couldn't answer in their half of the inning, but did mount a rally in the third.
With senior
Noelle Mulligan on second, freshman
Lauren Shirley singled her home to get the Ducks on the board. Junior
Sydney Spitz capped the scoring two batters later with an RBI double before Ramapo got one back with a home run in the fourth.
The Ducks were once again able to respond in their half of the fourth with a pair of RBI singles from freshman
Farryl Groder and Shirley, but after a scoreless fifth Ramapo put six runs on the board in the sixth to go up 11-4.
Stevens inched closer in the seventh with a three run home run off the bat of sophomore
Jessica Rees, but it's as close as they would get the rest of the game as Ramapo struck out the final three batters to clinch the win.
Rees' three RBIs led the Ducks while Shirley drove in two off three hits.
Stevens 7, Ramapo 5
Both teams traded zeroes though the first two innings before the Ducks put three on the board in the third. With Spitz and junior
Gavriella Risman-Jones on after infield singles, Rees blasted a home run to left.
Ramapo answered with a three run, two out rally in the fourth to tie the game, but a two run homer from senior
Jamie DeGennaro in the fifth put the Ducks back ahead.
Freshman pitcher
Olivia Gemma made the lead stick with a scoreless sixth, but five hits in the seventh amounted to four more Ramapo runs to put the Ducks in a two run hole.
The deficit proved too much for Stevens to overcome as Ramapo worked around a two out single to close out the game.
Rees and DeGennaro combined for all five of the Ducks RBIs while Risman-Jones added three hits and two runs.
