EWING, N.J. (April 9, 2015) – Freshmen
Cami Santor and
Julianna Ricci each recorded two points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 14 The College of New Jersey 7-5 on Thursday.
The Ducks saw their eight game winning streak end, falling to 8-2 while the Lions are now 9-2.
In a relatively low scoring contest, the Ducks were able to hold the Lions well below their 14 goals per game average they had entering the game.
Stevens notched the first two goals of the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just 3:33 in. Junior
Kathleen Kalbian started the scoring and was followed up by Ricci with both goals assisted by Santor. The Lions tallied the next three, as senior Kendal Borup had a hand in all three markers, scoring two goals and assisting on the other. The Ducks tied the game at three with 53 seconds left in the half, as Ricci scored her second of the game from junior
Erika Wilcox.
The host Lions started the second half scoring the first two goals, with Borup scoring 4:15 into the period and senior Ava Fitzgerald scoring midway through. Wilcox cut the deficit in half with an unassisted tally, but freshman Amanda Muller gave TCNJ the two goal cushion back. With 8:50 left, senior
Caitlyn Hughes rippled the mesh off a feed from sophomore
Caroline DeLuca, but the Lions took the ensuing draw down the field and Borup scored just 47 seconds later. The Ducks had three more shots the remainder of the game but were unable to find the back of the net.
Kalbian and Hughes led the way for Stevens with four shots while sophomore
Madison Annitto forced two turnovers from her defensive position. Freshman
Stephanie Schnelzer made seven saves and tied Annitto with two caused turnovers.
Borup had six points and seven shots while Kelly Schlupp made five saves in net.
Stevens is back in action Saturday as they take on St. John Fisher in Empire 8 action at the DeBaun Athletic Complex, with first draw at noon.
