HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- After battling weather over the last two weeks, Houghton track and field took matters into their own hands by scheduling a last-minute home meet on Wednesday.
And the weather was "somewhat" cooperative. Thunderstorms delayed the start for an hour and athletes and spectators braved the rains and chilly temperatures throughout the afternoon once action got underway.
Alfred University and Alfred State joined Houghton for the competition.
The day saw two NCCAA national qualifiers, with Houghton's Andrea Melhorn earning the mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 143-02 and Nikki Garns running a 2:23.79 in the 800. Both athletes won those events. Other winners for the women included Kate Taggart in the 400 (1:03.13) and Marissa Perez in the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.31).
The lone winner for the Alfred women was senior
Corine Pettit , in the triple jump (9.70 meters).
Other top performers for the Saxon women were: sophomore
Marissa Colburn, second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.35); freshman
Brynn Hyde, fourth in the hammer (33.51 meters) and fourth in the discus (29.74 meters); freshman
Megan Steen, fifth in the hammer (29.63 meters) and seventh in the discus (19.33 meters); and freshman
Teresa Fallon, sixth in the 800-mewter run (2:47.96).
