Alfred Stays Alive with 9-0 Win; Stevens Eliminated

Alfred University posted a 9-0 win against Stevens Institute of Technology to stay alive in the Empire 8 Softball Tournament. Alfred will face the loser of the Ithaca/St. John Fisher College game on Saturday at 11am. Stevens falls to 26-9-1 on the season and has been eliminated from the tournament.

The Saxons struck first with an unearned run in the first before a two-run home run put the Ducks in a 3-0 hole. An RBI triple in the second put Alfred up 4-0 where the lead stood after a scoreless third and fourth.
 
An RBI single and two-RBI double in the fifth extended the Saxon lead to 7-0.
 
Alfred added two more runs of insurance in the sixth before working around a two-out single in the seventh to seal the win.
 
Freshman Kerri Keeler struck out six and walked four to improve to 13-0 on the season.
 
Senior Alison Wickwire belted a homerun and double, drove in two and scored twice, and sophomore first baseman Sophia Chiavatti hit two doubles and drove in three runs to pace the Saxons' 11-hit attack.
 
Junior outfielder Samantha Jauregui hit a two-run triple and scored a run; junior catcher Jasmin Picini was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI; and junior second baseman Dana Torchia had two hits and scored three runs.
