WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (May 10, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell to Hunter College 7-5 and 5-1 Sunday in the ECAC Metro/Upstate Region Championship.

The losses end Stevens' season at 27-11-1.

A trio of unearned runs gave Hunter the early 3-0 lead, but the Ducks responded in their half of the first. With the bases loaded, sophomore Emily Sellitti grounded into a fielder's choice to plate one before an RBI single from freshman Lauren Shirley cut the deficit to one.

Hunter responded in the second with a three run home run to go up 6-2, but junior Sydney Spitz answered with a two run blast of her own to bring the Ducks to within two.

On in relief, freshman Olivia Gemma held the Hawks scoreless in the third, allowing Stevens to cut into the lead with Shirley's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

The 6-5 score held up after a scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth until Hunter added a run of insurance in the seventh. The lead proved to be enough as the Ducks went down scoreless in their half of the seventh.

Spitz and Shirley led the Ducks offensively with two RBIs each.

Hunter 5, Stevens 1

Hunter struck first with four in the first before holding the Ducks off the board over the next four innings. The Ducks threatened with base runners in the first, third and fourth, but Hunter starter Erika Colangelo was able to wiggle out of each jam.

The Hawks added a run of insurance in the fifth off an RBI single before the Ducks got on the board with a solo home run from Shirley in the sixth.

That's as close as the Ducks would get the rest of the afternoon however as Hunter shut the door with a scoreless seventh to seal the win.

DeGennaro added two hits for the Ducks while Gemma surrendered one run in seven innings of relief.
