Alfred's Torchia Earns Academic Honors from CoSIDA

ALFRED, NY — Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.), a junior second baseman on the Alfred University softball team, has earned academic honors from the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
                
Torchia was named a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 3 honoree. District 3 is made up of colleges and universities in New York State. Torchia is now eligible for consideration for CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American honors; CoSIDA will announce its Division III Academic All-American teams May 27.
                
The CoSIDA academic honors program takes into consideration excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. Student-athletes are eligible if they have a grade point average of at least 3.30. Torchia, a business administration major, has a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.74.
                
A three-year starting infielder for the Saxons, Torchia is a two-time Empire 8 all-conference second baseman, earning honorable mention as a sophomore in 2014 and Second Team honors this season. She has played in 41 games this year (all starts) and is batting .331 with 37 runs scored and 32 RBI. She has been nearly flawless in the field, posting a .993 fielding percentage, with just one error in 134 chances.
                
The Saxons (38-4 and ranked 15th in the nation) are coming off a weekend in which they hosted and won an NCAA regional tournament. AU will play at Heidelberg University in a best-of-three Super Regional Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, with the winner moving on to the Division III College World Series May 21-26 in Salem, VA.
