Impressive Showing on First Day of NYSCTC

Empire 8 track and field teams competed in the first day of the NYSCTC Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University.  
 
ITHACA
Ithaca's 4x800-meter relay team notched a team best third place finish. The relay team clocked a time of 7:56.89 to meet ECAC qualifying standards and earn six points towards Ithaca's overall team score.

Larry Cass took fourth in the hammer throw after reaching a distance of 51.86 meters. Cass also qualified for ECACs and added five points for the Bombers.

Freshman Tim Chapell completed the 10,000-meter run in 32:18.35 to place fourth with five points. Chappell's time beat the ECAC qualifying mark for the 10,000-meter run.

In the javelin throw, Gabe Shakour reached 47.88 meters to finish seventh. Shakour's throw earned his team two points.

Dane Eckweiler clocked a 58.15 second finish in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries to place eighth and move onto the finals.

Senior Rashaad Barrett and junior Aaron Matthias secured third and sixth place finishes in the 100-meter dash preliminaries. Barrett ran 10.99 seconds, while Matthias completed the race in 11.06 seconds. Barrett and Matthias will move on to compete in the finals tomorrow. Barrett's time qualified for the ECAC championship.

The duo will also run in the 200-meter finals tomorrow. Barrett finished fifth and Matthias seventh in the 200-meter dash prelims. Barrett crossed the finish line in 22.37 seconds and Matthias followed in 22.62 seconds. 


NAZARETH
junior Luis Rivera shattered his own school record in winning the hammer throw with a heave of 57.29 meters (187 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and vaulted himself closer to the nation's best. Junior Tom Sippie and freshman Nick LaBarbera finished 1-2 in the 400-meter prelims and qualified for Saturday's finals.


ST. JOHN FISHER 
After Devin Cornelius earned 10 points in the decathlon earlier the week, Fisher added 24 more points in the long jump with Mark VanMarterBrandon Fuentes and Bryan Rollins finishing first, second and fifth in the event.

Cornelius earned two more points in the pole vault for Fisher, while Fisher's 3,200 relay team (McQuade MilliganLuke DunkelbergTyler Wilkie and James Felice) earned another and qualified for ECAC with a record-setting time of 8:08.94.   Alex Schmitt also set a Fisher record in the 10K.

Fisher's Peter Girardi improved on his record-setting time in the 400 hurdles and advanced to Saturday's finals, while Joe D'Agostino also advanced to the finals in the 200.


UTICA 
Nicodemus Gambill (Rochester, NY/East High) and Jonathan Ramirez (West New York, NJ/Memorial ) qualified for both the 100 and 200m finals to lead the men's team.  Gambill finished second in the 100m (10.76) and third in the 200m (22.38), while Ramirez was seventh in the 100m (11.12) and improved to sixth in the 200m (22.60).
 
Ramirez also earned a team-best five points as he took fourth in the javelin with a toss of 50.71m.  Freshman Michael Visco (Amsterdam, NY /Broadalbin-Perth) also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.54m, earning five points for the Pioneers. 
 
The second day of competition is Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence's Merrick-Pinkard Track.
