Strong Start For Women's Track and Field At States

Empire 8 track and field teams competed in the first day of the NYSCTC Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University.
ITHACA
Senior
Christine Benway narrowly missed winning the long jump by .01 meters with a leap of 5.40 meters. Freshman
Grace Ryan came in fourth with a leap of 5.20 meters, while senior
Emilia Scheemaker took seventh in 5.12 meters.
Senior
Leigh Martino placed third in the 400-meter hurdle prelims in 1:05.89 to qualify for the finals. Sophomore
Kristin Lynn also competed in the 400 hurdles and took seventh in a time of 1:08.43.
In the 200-meter dash prelims, junior
Eliza Dewart crossed in 25.98 seconds, which was good for third overall and first in her heat. Junior
Christine Kelly placed eighth in 26.68 seconds.
Sophomore
Francesca Boylan measured out 35.56 meters in the javelin to come in third, while senior
Kristina Stockburger also placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.97 meters. Sophomore
Brandy Smith also entered the hammer and recorded a throw of 46.21 meters to take fourth.

Allison Bartkowiak and Benway ran a time of 9:36.40 to finish fifth overall.
Junior
Tina Gibble took seventh in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 40:56.85. Sophomore
Yvonne Palacios came in seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.23 meters.
In last weekend's heptathlon, sophomore
Natalie Meyer finished in fourth with 3597 points, senior
Brianna Hayes took fifth with 3584 points and Agnew came in eighth with 3196 points.
NAZARETH
Nazareth's 3200-meter relay team finished first and shattered a school record in the process with a winning time of 9:18.97. That team consisted of freshmen
Samantha Goble and
Kimmy Lovett, junior
Gabrielle LeBihan and senior
Michaela Gildemeyer. The winning time was nearly seven seconds faster than the school record time of 9:25.62 set at Emory earlier this season.
Senior
Hannah Brackley also ran well as she qualified for Saturday's finals in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes with times of :26.27 and :59.67 respectively. Junior
Taylor Pierson finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.25 meters (17 feet, 2 3/4 inches) and junior
Blair Meeson was eighth in the 10,000-meter run (41:00.26).
ST. JOHN FISHER
Senior
Taylor Youngkrans earned 10 points for the Cardinals after winning the hammer throw, setting a new Fisher record and posting the ninth-best mark in Division III this season (52.26 meters).
Sammy Van Gee placed second overall in the 10K with a record-setting time of 38:09, earning eight more points for the Cardinals.
Paige Willson also placed seventh in the javelin, while
Morgan Mastin advanced to Saturday's finals in the 200.
UTICA
Ashton Villeneuve picked up four points as she finished fifth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 39:07.82. Alexis Edwards also added four team points as she finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.77, which broke her own school record.
Sophomore Mikey Maxwell qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles as she ran a personal best, 15.79, which also qualifies her for the ECAC Championships. Classmate Gabby McQueen also had an impressive showing on the first day of the javelin, as she broke her own school record with a distance 27.40m.
The second day of competition is Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence's Merrick-Pinkard Track.
