Heinrich Named All-American With NCAA Win

MASON, Ohio (May 21, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis junior Matthew Heinrich was named an All-American Thursday after defeating Ross Putterman of Washington University, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the NCAA Individual Championship.
 
The honor is the second in as many years for Heinrich who made program history last spring with his inclusion and first round win in the championship. The two-day event is being held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
 
Heinrich's season ended however in the second round after a loss to Michael Buxbaum of Johns Hopkins University, 7-5, 6-2.
 
In a re-match of last year's first round, Putterman jumped out to the early advantage with a 6-2 win in the first set before Heinrich rebounded to take the next two 6-2 and 6-3 respectively. Putterman entered the match ranked No. 37 nationally and No. 7 in the Central region.
 
In round two, Buxbaum edged Heinrich 7-5 after a back-and-forth first set before taking the second 6-2.Buxbaun entered the match ranked No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the Atlantic South region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
 
The loss ends another highly successful season for Heinrich whose accomplishments included an ITA Northeast crown, an Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year award, and an E8 championship MVP.
