The St. John Fisher College men's track and field team had all three of its male athlete participants take part in Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Thursday, hosted by St. Lawrence University.

Mark VanMarter concluded his storied freshman season with three points for a sixth-place finish in the long jump at 7.21 meters.  With that jump, VanMarter becomes just the second All-American for the Fisher track program, joining teammate Devin Cornelius who earned All-American honors earlier this year after finishing in fifth place in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Cornelius completed record-breaking day in the decathlon, picking up 3,721 points in the first five events to stand in third place.  Cornelius started the day with back-to-back personal bests in the 100 meter dash and the long jump.  The junior ran 10.95 in the 100 for a second-place finish before jumping 6.70 meters in the long jump to take fourth place.  He also mustered up his second-best career shot put mark at 12.08.  In other field action he notched a season-best 1.88 in the high jump to take third place.  For the final event of the day Cornelius clocked in at 50.35 seconds in the 400 for seventh place.

Freshman Peter Girardi raced to an 11th-place finish in the 400 hurdles in a time of 53.40.  That mark puts Girardi as the top Division III freshman in the nation to end the season.

Cornelius will conclude the final five events for the decathlon on Friday.
