Wickwire named to NCAA softball all-tournament team
SALEM, VA – Alfred University's
Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) has been named to the all-tournament team for the NCAA Division III softball championships, played May 21-25 in Salem, VA.
Wickwire, a senior utility player, was among 13 players from eight teams competing at the championships named to the all-tournament team. In two games, she went a combined 4-for-6 with a homerun, a run scored and two RBI.
Her two RBI in a loss to Kean on Friday, May 22, gave her 55 for the year, breaking the AU single-season record of 54 set in 2010 by Jesika LeBarron. Her homerun in that same game, on the final at-bat of her Saxon career, was her 17
th this year, extending her single-season record.
Wickwire, who last week was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Second Team All-American, wrapped up a stellar career at the NCAA championships. A three-time First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star (2013-15) and two-time NFCA First Team Northeast Region selection (2014, 2015), Wickwire leaves Alfred the school's career leader in homeruns (27) and doubles and ranks second on the school's career list in RBI (117).
Alfred lost both games it played at the NCAA championship tournament, finishing the year with a 40-7 record. The 40 wins represent a new school record for a team that played in its first-ever national championship tournament. The Saxons won their first-ever Empire 8 championship tournament, then swept through the Alfred-hosted regional tournament. AU qualified for the national championships by winning the Tiffin (OH) Super Regional against host Heidelberg University.
Wickwire was named Most Outstanding Player of the Alfred Regional. She finished the season with a .388 batting average, 37 runs, 17 homeruns and 55 RBI. She made 19 pitching starts, going 13-4 with a 3.46 ERA and 114 strikeouts.
She graduated May 16 with bachelor's degrees in psychology and biology.
Tufts University won the Division III championship. Other teams competing in the tournament were: Texas-Tyler, Salisbury, Linfield, Kean, DePauw and Alma.
