Men's Track And Field At NYSCTC Championships
Results
Empire 8 track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2015 NYSCTC Outdoor Championships held at St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon.
ITHACA
Junior
Stephen Gomez led Ithaca with a first place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Gomez clocked a time of 9:37.49 to qualify for ECACs and earn 10 team points.
Brendan Davis placed seventh in the steeplechase with a time of 9:58.30.
Ithaca's 400-meter relay team also took first with a time of 41.91 seconds. The relay team, consisting of
Rashaad Barrett,
Aaron Matthias,
Tyler Curtis, and
Jordan Smith, also surpassed ECAC qualifying marks.
In the 1,500-meter run,
Sean Phillips took fourth and
Dennis Ryan placed sixth. Phillips crossed the finish line at 4:00.81 and Ryan completed the run in 4:01.53.
Junior
Alex Schneider secured a seventh place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.16 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash finals, Barrett took fourth in 11.02 to qualify for ECACs. Matthias followed in sixth with a time of 11.19 seconds. Barrett also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash and Matthias took fifth. Barrett clocked a time of 22.41 and Matthias finished in 22.44.
Junior
Dane Eckweiler secured a fifth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles to meet ECAC standards. Eckweiler ran a time of 56.86 in the hurdles.
Gomez, Phillips and
Tim Chappell also competed in the 5,000-meter run earning times of 15:21.18, 15:21.24 and 15:29.24, respectively. Gomez finished in third place, while Phillips took fourth and Chappell placed sixth.
The Bombers also surpassed ECAC times in the 1,600-meter relay.
Gerardo Munoz, J. Smith, Barrett and
Kyle MacKinnon made up the relay team that clocked a finish of 3:18.73 to take second in the 4x400-meter relays.
Sam Cherney notched a third place finish in the discus throw with a measurement of 41.47 meters.
Junior
Andrew Brandt cleared ECAC marks with a height of 1.98 meters in the high jump. Brandt's performance earned him a second place finish, while
Kevin Pomer ranked seventh in the high jump. Pomer reached 1.78 meters in the jump.
NAZARETH
Nazareth got first-place finishes from junior Tom Sippie in the 400-meter dash and sophomore Matt Battaglia in the 800-meter run (1:53.92) in addition to Luis Rivera's win in the hammer throw on Friday. The Golden Flyers also placed first in the 1600-meter relay, anchored by Sippie, and posted a winning time of 3:18.42. Freshman Nick LaBarbera, junior Jacob Murray and Battaglia also ran.
LaBarbera was named co-Rookie of the Meet after finishing second in the 400-meter dash, just a couple of ticks behind Sippie, with a time of :48.72. Other top performers included freshman Kevin Witt, who was fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:47.44; junior Brandon Vuolo, who was sixth in the discus with a distance of 39.51 meters; and junior Khiary Gayle, who was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.50 meters.
ST. JOHN FISHER
Kyle Koehler won the shot put with a toss of 15.24 meters, earning 10 points. Freshman
Peter Girardi was second in the 400 hurdles, setting a new Fisher record (and the 20th best time in the nation) at 54.04 seconds.
Senior
Chris Wehner earned eight points with a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles, while first-year standouts
Mark VanMarterand
Bryan Rollins placed third and fourth in the high jump.
Joe D'Agostino ran the 100 meters in 11.06 seconds, placing fifth overall,
Brandon Fuentes finished sixth overall in the triple jump, while
James Felice set a new Fisher record in the 1,500 and was seventh overall.
ALFRED
Senior
Sean Locker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) picked up Alfred's lone win in the javelin throw. He landed the javelin 59.06 meters out as he closes in on the school record of 59.77 meters.
Freshman
Alex Hall (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) was the next highest finisher for the Saxons. He ran a 9:44.16 in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. The time was good enough for second place. Junior
Ian Bishop (Bronx, NY/Bronxwood Prep) also garnered a second place standing on the pedestals with a toss of 15.00 meters in the shot put.
Junior
Gregory Matos (Bronx, NY/ELLIS Prep) earned a fourth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 49.53.
Sophomore
Jeffrey Nunez (Wurtsboro, NY/Ellenville) took home two points-earning places in the field on the weekend. He finished seventh in both the hammer throw and discus throw with distances of 47.93 meters and 39.11 meters, respectively.
Other individual points-winners for the Saxons on the track were sophomore
Kevin Dixon (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) in the 10,000 Meter (32:51.05) and freshman
Jeff Daneault (Natick, MA/Natick) in the 400 Meter Hurdles (58.58). Both runners took eighth in their respective events. Sophomoe
D'Mitri Simmons (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 12.95 meters.
The top Saxon relay was the squad of freshman
Seth Spicer (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post), junior
Ethan Foster (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg), graduate-athlete
Eddie Potter (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and Matos in the 1,600 Meter relay. They combined for a sixth place finish with a time of 3:24.28.
Earlier, in the 3,200 Meter Relay, the group of freshman
Matt Roder (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), sophomore
Luke Tesoriero (Cortland, NY/Homer), freshman
Erik Diehl (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) and Potter raced to a time of 8:05.55 to finish seventh.
UTICA
The men's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Christian St. Amour, Nicodemus Gambill, Dominick Silvestri and Jonathan Ramirez collected eight points with a time of 42.23 as they set a new championship record with their best time of the season.
Rob Tutein won his third event of the season with a victory in the high jump as he cleared 2.03 meters, tying the outdoor record.
Sam Kaczmarek tossed the shot put 14.53 meters for a fourth place finish and five points.
Ramirez shattered his own record in the javelin with a fly of 50.71 meters.
