E8 Athletes of the Week: May 4
Baseball Player – Canton
Seth Douglas, Sophomore, OF – Reedsburg, WI/Reedsburg
Douglas hit .667 in 12 at-bats this week leading the Roos to two wins. The sophomore finished the week 8-for-12 with three doubles driving in six runs in just four games. He finished the week with tremendous marks of a .714 on-base percentage and .917 slugging percentage. He also had 25 put outs playing in the outfield. He went 3-for-4 scoring once and driving in four runs against SUNY Poly on Tuesday against SUNY Poly. On Sunday in a 2-0 win against Penn State Abington he went a perfect 4-for-4 driving in both runs.
Baseball Pitcher – Stevens
Jayson Yano, Junior – Foothill Ranch, CA/El Toro
In two starts this week, Jayson Yano went 2-0, tossing 15 innings and allowing only one unearned run. In a 3-0 win over Farmingdale St. he allowed one hit in six innings, walking three and striking out five. In a complete game victory over Ithaca, he scattered eight hits while walking one striking out three, allowing just the one unearned run.
Softball Player – Utica
Alysa Russell, Junior, SS – Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville
Junior Alysa Russell was 9-for-15 with eight RBI and eight runs scored as Utica went 4-0 last week. Seven of her nine hits were extra base hits, including four home runs. Her biggest performance was a 4-for-4 outing in Utica’s win over Cazenovia, marking the first time in her career that she accomplished the feat. On the season, she leads the team and ranks third in the conference with a .472 batting average, 50 hits, and seven home runs. She is also second in the E8 with a .533 on base percentage and 41 runs scored. She ended her junior campaign on a 12-game hitting streak.
Softball Pitcher – Alfred
Kerri Keeler, Freshman – Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt
Kerri Keeler was 4-0 last week with one save for the Saxons. She won three games in the Empire 8 tournament; tossing complete-game shutouts against Stevens and Ithaca before earning the victory in a 3-2 win over Fisher in the title game. She was named tournament MVP. Earlier in the week, she had a win and a save in a doubleheader sweep of Houghton. For the week, Keeler pitched 27.2 innings and allowed three earned runs, with 19 strikeouts for a combined ERA of 0.76. With the four wins, she improved to 15-0 on the season.
Men’s Lacrosse Player – Nazareth
Will Fallo, Senior, Attack – Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland
Will Fallo helped the Golden Flyers secure their ninth Empire 8 Conference title as he was named the tournament MVP. In the 13-4 win over St. John Fisher on Wednesday he tallied two assists, one groundball and one caused turnover. In the 9-8 victory over Ithaca on Saturday he scored three goals, including was proved to be the game-winner when the Golden Flyers took a 9-5 lead with 5:16 left in regulation.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – Nazareth
Michael Cuciti, Sophomore – Farmington, NY/Canandaigua
Michael Cuciti helped Nazareth secure its ninth Empire 8 Conference title as he totaled 17 saves in wins over St. John Fisher and Ithaca last week. He made seven saves while yielding just four goals in a 13-4 win over St. John Fisher last Wednesday. He had 10 saves in a 9-8 win over Ithaca in Saturday's championship game.
Women's Lacrosse Player – St. John Fisher College
Lindsey Shoales, Senior – West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore
Senior Lindsey Shoales was named as the Championship's Most Valuable Player. After leading Fisher with five draw controls in Saturday's 10-7 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, Shoales led her squad with four ground balls in Sunday's victory over Ithaca.
Women's Lacrosse Goalie – St. John Fisher College
Nicole Hart, Junior – Syracuse, NY/West Genesee
Nicole Hart compiled ten saves over the course of two games to help lead Fisher to its fourth straight Empire 8 Women’s Lacrosse Championship. She tallied seven saves against Stevens in the semifinals and three against Ithaca in the title game.

Men’s Tennis Player– Stevens
Matthew Heinrich, Junior – Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville
Junior Matthew Heinrich led Stevens to its sixth consecutive Empire 8 Conference championship Sunday after an undefeated weekend at first singles and doubles. Heinrich teamed with junior Ben Foran for a pair of wins at first doubles before winning at first singles in Saturday's semi. For his efforts, Heinrich was named the championship's MVP for the third time in as many years.
Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete – Nazareth
Matt Battaglia, Sophomore – Syracuse, NY/Solvay
Matt Battaglia was one of three individual champions for the Golden Flyers over the weekend at the NYSCTC Championships at St. Lawrence. He posted a personal-best time of 1:53.92 to win the 800-meter run and also ran on the Golden Flyers' school record-shattering 4 x 400-meter relay that finished first in 3:18.42.
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Stevens
Robert Pinto, Senior – Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell
Senior Robert Pinto dominated the competition in the high jump reaching a height of 2.07m at the Matthew Vassar Twilight meet. This leap not only defeated the field by .3 meters, he broke his own school record by .06cm and recorded the tenth highest jump in the Division III outdoor season to date.
Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete – Nazareth
Hannah Brackley, Senior – Horseheads, NY/Elmira Notre Dame
Hannah Brackley was named Track Athlete of the Meet after being part of four school records as Nazareth competed at the NYSCTC Track and Field Championships at St. Lawrence. She won the 400-meter dash in :56.09 and now ranks ninth nationally in that event. She was second in the 200-meter dash in :25.42 and anchored both the 4 x 100- and 4 x 400-meter relays. Nazareth won the 4 x 400 and shattered the school record with a time of 3:53.49 to rank 23rd nationally.
Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete – St. John Fisher College
Taylor Youngkrans, Senior – Oneida, NY/Oneida
Taylor Youngkrans set a new Fisher record and posted the ninth best mark in Division III this season (52.26 M) to win the hammer throw at the NYSCTC.
