Stevens Tops Houghton In E8 Tournament

UTICA, N.Y. (May 7, 2015) – Junior
Robert Robbins threw seven innings of one-run ball to help the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeat Houghton College 4-2 in the first game of the Empire 8 conference tournament Thursday.
The Ducks move to 28-13 overall, and will take on St. John Fisher College tomorrow at 2 p.m. Houghton falls to 17-21 and will meet SUNY-Canton at 10 a.m.
Junior
Robert Robbins started for the Ducks and ran into trouble in the top of the first, as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Robbins was able to escape unscathed, as he struck out the side to end the threat.
Stevens struck for three in their half of the first inning, as junior
Jonathan Toro led off with a single and came all the way home on a one out double by sophomore
Zeph Walters. After a single and a stolen base by junior
Jayson Yano, junior
Nick Sieber delivered a two-run single to left.
Stevens added an additional run in the bottom of the fifth after Toro was hit with a pitch, freshman
Tommy Baronner recorded a bunt single and Walters grounded into a fielder's choice. Yano came up knocked in Toro with a single up the middle and the bases became loaded after a Sieber single. Houghton pitcher Scott Cornell escaped the jam with a foul out and a ground out to second.
The Highlanders pushed a run across in the top of the seventh, as sophomore Bryan Hodge led off with a single. He moved to second after a stolen base and advanced 90 feet closer on a single to left field by senior Christopher Mckay. An infield single by senior Enrico Sukhdeo brought Hodge in, but Robbins got a groundout to end the inning.
Hodge delivered a two-out RBI single to right field which scored freshman Tage Johnson, who had reached on a single. That was all they would get as junior
Danny McIntyre shut the door and forced Timothy Leathersich to bounce into a fielder's choice.
Walters, Yano and Sieber each had two hits, with those contributing all four RBI's. Yano ended up 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Robbins allowed seven hits, one run with seven strikeouts.
Hodge and Sukhdeo both identical 2-for-4 days with an RBI, while Cornell went the distance, surrendering 10 hits allowing four runs while and striking out a pair.
