First-Round NCAA Win For Ithaca

BRUNSWICK,Maine – The Ithaca College women's tennis team disposed of The College of Staten Island by a 5-0 score in an NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship first-round match Friday, May 8 at Bowdoin College. This is the fourth year in a row that Ithaca has advanced to the second round of the NCAAs.
 
Ithaca improved its record to 14-8 on the season, while Staten Island ended the year at 13-5. It is the second consecutive year that the Bombers have faced and beaten the Dolphins in the first round of the national tournament.
 
Ithaca started things with a sweep of the doubles matches. The Bombers put the first team point on the board at third doubles with an 8-1 win by Alyssa Steinweis and Kelly Fishback. The first-doubles team of Haley Kusak and Carly Siegel followed with a win by the same 8-1 score. The sweep was completed with an 8-4 victory by Allison Vizgaitis and Marni Blumenthal at second doubles.

The Bombers led in the remaining four singles matches, which were unfinished as Ithaca already secured the five team points required for the dual-match victory.
 
This is the ninth-straight year that Ithaca has appeared in the tournament, and Ithaca's all-time record in NCAA Tournament play is 6-8.
 
Ithaca will face regional host and nationally-ranked Bowdoin in the second round in a match at 11 a.m. Saturday. Live Stats will be available from Bowdoin.
