Fisher Takes Third In Inaugural Empire 8 Championship
The St. John Fisher College baseball squad secured a third place finish in the inaugural Empire 8 Championship after the third-seeded Cardinals defeated seventh-seeded SUNY Canton 9-4 in the consolation game Saturday.
With the win, Fisher closes out the regular season with a 25-18 record, while SUNY Canton falls to 14-30. The Cardinals will find out early Monday morning whether or not they will earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
Fisher wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs in the opening inning. The Cardinals benefited from two errors to score two of their five runs in the frame.
Malcolm Kelsey hit a two-RBI double to make the score 3-0, while
Matthew Cahill notched a sacrifice fly to bring in
Cody Wiktorski to push the lead to 4-0.
Mike Roman started off the second inning with a double, allowing
Scott Eisenmenger to bring him around to give Fisher a 6-0 advantage.
Calvin Woolhiser registered a sacrifice RBI in the seventh before the Kangaroos scored their first run of the game to make it 7-1 after five innings.
After two more runs for the Roos in the sixth, Fisher pushed two more runs around to pad to its lead.
Victor Konstantinovsky recorded a two-RBI single for Fisher's final runs of the game.
SUNY Canton scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Terry Engels earned the win going six innings, allowing eight hits, while striking out three.
Ryan Felske,
Ryan Smith and
Colton Fergus each pitched an inning of relief.
Wiktorski went 3-for-5 with one double while Kelsey and Konstantinovsky each drove in two RBI.
