Stevens Advances To ECAC Championship
WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (May 9, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology softball sophomore
Emily Sellitti and freshman
Corinne Loncar each homered Saturday to lead the Ducks to a 6-5 win over Hunter College in game one of the ECAC Tournament.
The win moved Stevens to 27-9-1 while Hunter fell to 21-10. The victory puts the Ducks one win shy of an ECAC championship.
Hunter struck first with a three in the first, but after a scoreless second, the Ducks answered with four in the third. Sellitti started the scoring with a two-run home run to left before Loncar followed two batters later with one of her own.
The blast was the first of Loncar's career and the third of the season for Sellitti.
On in relief, freshman pitcher
Olivia Gemma held the lead with a one-two-three fourth, allowing the Ducks to add to their lead in the bottom of the inning.
With freshman
Gina Schnecker on first, junior
Gavriella Risman-Jones bunted safely and reached third off a throwing error to score Schnecker. Junior
Sydney Spitz capped the inning one batter later with an RBI single to put the Ducks up 6-3.
The runs were enough for Gemma who worked around a pair of base runners in the fifth before retiring the side in order in the sixth. Hunter rallied with two runs in the seventh, but a punch-out at the plate off a throw from sophomore
Jessica Rees in left clinched the win for Stevens.
The Ducks will play the winner of Brooklyn College and Hunter, who play at 10 a.m., tomorrow at 12 p.m. Either team would have to beat Stevens twice tomorrow to steal the championship.
