Katie Marcella Tabbed Head Women’s Basketball Coach
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College Director of Athletics Dr.
Kim Fierke has announced the hiring of
Katie Marcella as head women's basketball coach.
Marcella most recently served as head women's basketball coach at Division III Monmouth College in Illinois this past season. She also spent three seasons at the helm at Keuka College.
"I am pleased to have Katie as our coach," Fierke stated. "She has the experience, drive, and enthusiasm that will build our women's basketball program. I am excited to have her join our staff and to work with our scholar-athletes."
Marcella led Monmouth to a 10-win campaign and a 9-9 Midwest Conference mark in her first season piloting the Fighting Scots in 2014-15. Prior to Monmouth, she was a part of six postseason appearances at Keuka, which included three North Eastern Athletic Conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
She began her collegiate coaching career at Keuka, serving as assistant women's basketball and head cross country coach from 2008-2012. In that period of time, she helped the program to a pair of NEAC Championships and two trips to the national tournament. She took over the reins of the program on an interim basis in December 2011, and promptly led the Storm to a 19-6 record, their third consecutive NEAC crown, and third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Keuka removed the interim tag from Marcella's job title, making her the full-time head women's basketball coach in May 2012. She guided the Storm to the NEAC regular season title and the conference championship game in 2012-2013. In her six seasons associated with the program, she helped Keuka to a record of 110-40.
A 2007 graduate of the College at Brockport, Marcella received a bachelor's degree in physical education. She received a master's degree from her alma mater in athletic administration in 2011.
As a player at Brockport, Marcella was a four-year letter winner and three-year captain for the Golden Eagles. As a sophomore, she helped the program to the 2004-2005 SUNYAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She was a second team all-conference pick in her junior campaign, and named first team All-SUNYAC and team MVP as a senior.
"I'm so grateful for the opportunity that Dr. Fierke and Hartwick College has given me to be the next head women's basketball coach," said Marcella. "The next year is going to be a year of perseverance I'm excited for the future of Hartwick basketball."
