Stevens Student-Athletes Participate in Top Of The V Leadership Academy
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology saw 51 student-athletes participate in the Second Annual Top of the V Leadership Academy over the last three days.
The three-day program was highlighted by renowned sports psychologist Dr. Joel Fish, who discussed "Skills to Be a Terrific Leader." Student-athletes were broken down into six groups and coaches helped lead a variety of different discussion groups, including topics on leadership and holding teammates accountable, and leadership and coach/player relationships.
"The Leadership Academy was a great way to bring Athletics together as a whole," junior field hockey student-athlete and second year leadership participant
Emily Stukenborg said. "It was good to interact with student-athletes from other teams."
Another main component was having the student-athletes describe what #AllRise meant to them, and how to get the campus to embrace the #AllRise mantra.
"I thought it was a great way to kick-off the start of the 2015-16 athletic season," said senior field hockey and women's lacrosse student-athlete
Angela Bauroth. "All these leaders will help promote unity within Stevens Athletics."
The event is part of a two-part leadership program in athletics along with a 12-week physical education class "Leadership Through The Prism of Athletics." During the class, students hear from different members of the Stevens coaching staff each week leading discussion on what entails being a team leader.
"Our overall goal is to try to better equip Stevens student athletes with the tools they need to be leaders within themselves, with their teams and as a part of the Stevens community," head women's soccer coach Jeff Parker said. "We hope they will be able to use those discussions and ideas to help both in and out of the classroom and be takeaways for them both while they are here and after we send them forth upon graduation."
Parker, along with head women's basketball coach Megan Haughey and head women's lacrosse coach Celine Cunningham were the three primary facilitators during the three day period.
