ALFRED, NY — Alfred University softball player Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) has been recognized by the NCAA for leading the nation in doubles.

The NCAA has released its final 2015 statistical report and Chiavatti, a junior-to-be first baseman, is cited for leading all Division III players in doubles per game. She belted 26 doubles (also tops in the country) in 39 games for a per-game average of .67.

Chiavatti's .67 doubles per game also paced all NCAA players, regardless of division, and her 26 doubles tied for the nation's lead among all NCAA players. The 26 doubles shattered the previous AU school single-season record of 15, set my Molly Shepherd in 2010.

She was also 12th in the nation in batting average .495 (a new AU single-season mark) and led her team in on-base percentage (.509). She had 53 hits (second on the team) and slugged .738 (third), while driving in 23 runs and scoring 10. Chavatti was stellar on defense, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with no errors in 174 chances. She made eight pitching appearances (five starts) and went 3-0 with a 3.07 ERA.

Chiavatti was a First Team Empire 8 Conference and ECAC Upstate all-star and was a Second Team NFCA Northeast Region selection. She is one of eight starters set to return to a Saxon team that went 40-7, claimed the Empire 8 Conference regular season and championship tournament crowns, and advanced to the Division III College World Series for the first time in program history.
