Athletes of the Week: Sept. 7-13
Empire 8 student-athletes continued to perform at a high level in the early part of the 2015-16 season.
Football Offensive Player – Cortland
Kyle Schneider, Junior, QB – Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley
Kyle Schneider completed 20-of-27 passes for 382 yards and four touchdowns in his first collegiate start in Cortland's 61-49 win at Framingham State. His passing yardage is the fifth-highest single-game total in school history. Four of his completions went for 55 or more yards. He threw touchdown passes of 58, 55, 25 and one yard.
Football Defensive Player – Alfred
Holden Whitehead, Junior, LB – Mill Hale, PA/Central Mountain
Holden Whitehead led Alfred with 10 tackles, including one for a loss of two yards, in the Saxons’ 32-20 victory over visiting RPI. Six of his tackles were solo. With just over two minutes to play in the fourth quarter RPI was driving for a potential go-ahead score but the Saxon defense held strong and forced the Engineers to turn the ball over.
Football Special Teams Player – Utica
Thomas Woodburn, Senior, K/P – West Islip, NY/West Islip
Utica senior kicker Thomas Woodburn connected on three field goals for the Pioneers (36, 34, 35 yards) Saturday. His first field goal of the game gave UC a 10-7 lead as time expired in the second quarter. Woodburn now has five field goals in just two games for Utica. He had ten total points on Saturday and is now tied for second on the College's all-time list with 162 career points. He also has a school-record 24 career field goals and 90 extra points made.
Field Hockey Offensive Player – Nazareth
Catherine Willard, Senior, Forward – Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland
Catherine Willard helped Nazareth go 2-0 on the week, including a 4-2 victory over Elmira to open conference play. She scored two goals, including the game-winner against Brockport on Wednesday as the Golden Flyers won 4-0. She came back to score two more goals against Elmira on Saturday. With Nazareth leading 3-2 late in the game, Willard notched an insurance goal to help lift the Golden Flyers to a victory.
Field Hockey Defensive Player – St. John Fisher
Danielle Famolaro, Senior, GK – Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy
Danielle Famolaro had an impressive game against Stevens on Saturday as she tied her season-high for saves with 12, leading the team to a 3-1 win in their first Empire 8 contest of the 2015 season.
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Ithaca
Sawyer Hitchcock, Senior – Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern
Senior Sawyer Hitchcock led Ithaca with a sixth place individual finish out of 302 runners on the 6K Saratoga Springs State Park course in a time of 19:22.7.
Women’s Cross Country Runner – Ithaca
Taryn Cordani, Sophomore – Douglas, MA/Douglas
Sophomore Taryn Cordani placed second overall out of 277 runners on the Saratoga Spring State Park 5K course in a time of 17:35.0, which was seven seconds behind the individual winner.
Men’s Golf Athlete – St. John Fisher
Corey Hass, Senior – Cuba, NY/Cuba-Rushford
Corey Hass helped lead Fisher to a first place finish overall out of 18 of the nations top teams at the Flower City Preview this weekend. Corey finished first with a score of 145 in two rounds, finishing even par the first day and a +1 the second day.
Women’s Golf Player – Ithaca
Indiana Jones, Sophomore – Alton Bay, NH/Prospect Mountain
Indiana Jones was the top finisher at the Empire 8 Women’s Golf Championship as she carded 27-hole score of 108 on the par-73 course. She recorded a nine hole score of 38 on Saturday and a career-best round of 70, three under par, on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player – Elmira
Michael Bryant, Junior, Forward – Portola Hills, CA/El Toro
Michael Bryant continued his superb play with an eight-point week. All eight points came on goals, as Bryant tallied four scores in two games. He scored the lone goal against Keuka College before registering a hat-trick in a 3-1 win against Hilbert College. His first goal against Hilbert was scored just 40 seconds into the contest. Bryant's hat-trick is the first of his career. Additionally, Bryant has scored in Elmira's first four games and has six total on the year.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player – Utica
Patrick Claffey, Junior, Defense – Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills
Utica College junior Patrick Claffey netted a goal and an assist in three games this week. Claffey netted his first collegiate goal in a win against SUNY Poly and had an assist on the game winner. Claffey also led the Pioneers defense this week as they held SUNY Poly and Wells College to one goal each. The Pioneers have won two out of their last three games.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player – Stevens
Zisi Komar, Freshman, Forward – San Diego, CA/University City
Zisi Komar tallied three goals and 11 shots in helping the Ducks to a 2-1 week. Against Mount Saint Mary, Komar came off the bench to score a pair of goals on four shots in a 4-0 victory. On Saturday against Vassar, Komar headed a ball into the net with 1:24 remaining in double overtime to give Stevens a 2-1 victory while also attempting eight shots.
Women’s’ Soccer Defensive – Hartwick
Madison Miller, Freshman, Defender – Oneonta, NY/Oneonta
Madison Miller scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Elms on Saturday and then scored the first two goals in the 3-0 win against Johnson and Wales as Hartwick retained the Brozman Cup. Madison also helped anchor the Hawk defense to its fifth straight shut out.
Women’s Tennis Player – Stevens
Katrina Guido, Sophomore – Emmaus, PA/Emmaus
Katrina Guido enjoyed a 4-0 week for the Ducks combined at singles and doubles, helping the team to E8 wins over Alfred and Fisher. Both of Guido's singles wins came handily in two sets, while the doubles wins came by scores of 8-1 and 8-2. Behind Guido, the Ducks have won three matches in-a-row.
Women’s Volleyball Player – Utica
Laura Homer-Gunther, Senior, MH – Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit
Senior Laura Homer-Gunther totaled 36 kills, eight aces, 25 digs, and a team-high 18 blocks in five matches last week. She totaled an impressive .529 hitting percentage on the week and did not commit a single hitting error. On the season, she leads the E8 with a .491 hitting percentage.
Women’s Volleyball Rookie – Ithaca
Katie Evans, Freshman, MH – Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales
Freshman Katie Evans hit an impressive .519 over three matches for Ithaca last weekend. Evans finished the week with 30 kills on 54 swings, and committed just two errors. She also had four digs, three blocks and one ace. Against Alfred on Sept. 11, Evans put down 10 kills in 12 attempts for an .833 hitting percentage.
