There is something special about the intercollegiate athletics rivalry between Ithaca College and Cortland.

The two Division III schools are separated by just 21 miles, and whenever the two institutions collide, there is more on the line than just a win or a loss: the games carry added significance for the student-athletes, for the coaches, and for the proud alums.

Included in this prestigious rivalry is the 57th annual Cortaca Jug football game, which is expected to attract more than 10,000 fans to Butterfield Stadium on Ithaca's campus for one of the biggest games in the country.

Beginning this fall, the Ithaca/Cortland rivalry will take on added meaning, as both schools have partnered up with area charities to make a difference in their communities.

Ithaca is proud to announce its #ShedTheRed campaign, where students are encouraged to bring an article of red clothing to any home game versus Cortland. In exchange, students making a donation of a red item of clothing will receive a blue Bombers t-shirt (while supplies last).

All donated clothing items will go to the Ithaca Rescue Mission Alliance.

"Clothing donations to the Ithaca Rescue Mission make a very real difference in the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness," said Richard Bennett, the director of the Ithaca Rescue Mission.

"Some clothing articles go directly to those in in need; others are sold in Rescue Mission Thrifty Shopper stores, where all proceeds fund shelter and food for homeless and hungry women and men right here in our community."

The men's soccer clash with Cortland on Sept. 9 marked the first of three scheduled #ShedTheRed dates.

The other #ShedTheRed dates are volleyball (Oct. 7) and football (Nov. 14).

Students are encouraged to show up at the games and donate their red article of clothing in exchange for a blue Bombers t-shirt.
