Thirty-three student-athletes attended the 2016 Empire 8 Summit, which was held at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa in Fairport, NY from Jan. 22-23.
In addition to the student-athletes, there were eight campus advisors and five Direct Reports in attendance. The Summit is made possible through the NCAA Strategic Grant Tier II funds and provides the Empire 8 with an opportunity to bring campus personnel together from around the conference to integrate and collaborate on ideas.
“We hope that the Summit provided the participants with information and resources to dedicate, discover and develop their future in Division III athletics and beyond,” stated Associate Commissioner Janelle Zera.
The Empire 8 was pleased to welcome Dr. Joel Fish as the keynote speaker to address the Summit attendees. Fish has worked extensively with athletes of all ages and skills levels, from youth sport through the Olympic and professional ranks. He has served as a sport psychology consultant for many of the major Philadelphia-area sports teams, including the Flyers (NHL),
76ers (NBA), Phillies (MLB) and Charge (WUSA), as well as the USA Women's National Soccer Team. He has spoken nationwide on sport psychology at over 200 universities and is also a popular presenter at a variety of athletic functions.
Summit attendees took part in round table discussions, Minute-to-Win-it activities, heard from Commissioner Chuck Mitrano on how to prepare for their professional career and created an action plan to share/implement what they learned when they return to their campuses.
