Fisher Fall in NCAAs to Babson
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team concluded its historic season with a 3-0 loss to Babson College in the Division III NCAA Sweet Sixteen on Saturday afternoon. The loss puts the team's record at 19-3 on the year, the best in program history. It also snapped Fisher's 18-game win streak, which lead all teams in the country.
Babson got on the board early as the Beavers scored just 1:43 into the contest. Fisher nearly tied it a few minutes later on a penalty corner opportunity, but
Nickole Morgan's rip from the perimeter of the arc was turned aside. Play would be pretty even through the remainder of the half as neither team could find the back of the goal. Babson bookended it though, scoring with just over 35 seconds left, allowing them to bring the 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second stanza mirrored the first, with the Beavers finding an early score. With time dwindling and down three goals, Morgan had what appeared to be the Cardinals' first goal. The tally was called back though as she took the shot from beyond the arc and it deflected off a defender, thus nullifying the chance.
Ashley Maynard played all 70 minutes in goal for Fisher, registering five saves on the day.
