After the completion of the 2016 Empire 8 fall season the conference office has released the current Commissioner’s Cup standings.

Ithaca College leads the way with a .873 percentage, edging out Stevens Institute of Technology with .836. The Bombers had a strong showing across the board winning five conference titles, which included men’s and women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Ithaca finished second in women’s soccer.

Stevens won the women’s soccer championship for the second straight year.  The Ducks also finished as runner up in women’s cross country, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, while taking third in men’s cross country and competing in the semifinals of men’s soccer and field hockey.

St. John Fisher ranks third in the standings with a .704 percent after winning the championship in field hockey and men’s soccer for the first time ever. The third place standing is an improvement upon last fall when the Cardinals were ranked fourth with .529 percent. Fisher had its best finish in men’s cross country with a runner-up finish and the football team finished second in the standings, all coming down to the final game of the regular season.

Nazareth stands fourth with a .561 percent after finishing third in women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer and women’s tennis.

Not far behind is Houghton College with .541 percent after its second consecutive E8 postseason appearance in men’s soccer and finishing in fifth place in men’s cross country, their second-best finish ever at the E8 championship. Women’s cross country matched their sixth place finish from the previous two years.

Hartwick, Alfred, Utica and Elmira complete the standings. The Hawks made tournament appearances in field hockey, women’s soccer and women’s tennis, while Alfred won the E8 Football title with an undefeated record.

Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 standings at the completion of the season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). The conference championship team in each sport receives the highest amount of points, followed by the runner-up. Teams tied for a position are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual amount of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine percentage.
