Athletes of the Week: Nov. 14-20, 2016
Men's and women's basketball opened their seasons over the past week as swimming and diving teams continue with its season. Those earning weekly honors for the week of Nov. 14-20 are:
Men’s Basketball Player – Ithaca
Marc Chasin, Junior, Guard – Miami, FL/Gulliver
Marc Chasin became just the 22nd player in Ithaca College men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points as the junior helped the BOmbers to two wins last week. Chasin averaged 29.3 points on .484 shooting to go along with 7.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game overall. Against Rochester, Chasin tallied 32 points and seven boards before scoring 17 points in the opening round of the Cortaca Classic on Friday. On Saturday, Chasin scored a career-high 39 points including the game winning shot in a 95-93 win over Purchase College.
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Ithaca
Gabe Perez-Ronchetta, Freshman, Forward – Miami, FL/Florida Christian
Gabe Perez-Ronchetta made an immediate impact as the Ithaca College men's basketball team posted a pair of wins last week. Perez-Ronchetta averaged 13.7 points and 3.3 rebounds over his first three career games. The freshman forward also knocked down six 3-pointers and shot .522 overall from the field. Perez-Ronchetta scored 12 points in his collegiate debut against Rochester before adding 14 and 15 points, respectively, against St. Joseph's - Long Island and Purchase College.
Women’s Basketball Player – Alfred
Amanda Off, Senior, Forward – New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley
Senior Amanda Off broke 1,000 career points on Saturday against Hunter College. She entered the season with 944 points and scored 17 against Wells College on Tuesday evening, 25 against SUNY Purchase on Friday and 19 against Hunter to bring her career total to 1,005 points. Off is shooting .543 from the floor and is a dead-even .500 from beyond the arc on the week. Both of her games on Friday and Saturday yielded double-doubles for here, adding 10 rebounds (five offensive and five defensive) against Purchase and 16 (five offensive and 11 defensive) against Hunter. Off accumulated three blocks and six steals while assisting on 11 scores. She averaged 20.3 points per game.
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Nazareth
Rachel Benedict, Freshman, Forward – Brockport, NY/Brockport
Rachel Benedict had a pair of big games for the Golden Flyers as Nazareth claimed the championship of the Buffalo State Tournament. She was named tournament MVP after averaging 21 points and 13.5 rebounds in wins over Thiel and Buffalo State. She scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 67-53 win over Thiel on Friday and then combined 17 points with 14 rebounds in Saturday's come-from-behind win over Buffalo State. She also shot .515 from the field (17-for-33) and hit three three-point baskets.
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Ithaca
Andrew Mikhailichenko, Freshman – Ithaca, NY/Ithaca
Andrew Mikhailichenko posted the Bombers' two individual first place finishes over the weekend as part of a tri-meet against SUNY Geneseo and Hartwick College. Mikhailichenko won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.58 and would go on to take the top spot in the 200 breaststroke after touching the wall six seconds ahead of the field in 2:07.98. The freshman also secured a third place finish in the 200 individual medley. He also helped the Bombers to a second place finish in the 200 medley relay after swimming the second leg.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Ithaca
Lake Duffy, Senior – Chadds Ford, PA/Pen Argyl
Lake Duffy of the nationally-ranked Ithaca College women's swimming and diving team helped extend the Bombers' winning streak to eight over the weekend with wins against Hartwick College and SUNY Geneseo. Duffy notched a pair of top finishes in individual competition after the senior won both the 50 and 100 free. In the 50, Duffy notched a winning time of 24.27 before finishing the 100 in 53.25. The Chadds Ford, Pa. native also swam in both relays as the Bombers placed first overall in the 200 medley relay before taking second place in the 200 free.
