Fisher Wins In Overtime; Cardinals Advances To Empire 8 Title Game

Emily Markarian snapped a 1-1 tie with a break-away goal in overtime to lift top-seed St. John Fisher College to a 2-1 win over No.4 Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday night in the first Empire 8 Conference Championship semifinal matchup.
With the win, Fisher improves to 17-2 overall and pushes it current winning streak to 16 games. The Cardinals will now face either No. 2 Hartwick College or No. 3 Washington & Jefferson College at 4 p.m. Saturday in the title game. The winner of Saturday's championship contest will earn an automatic to next week's NCAA Division III Championship.
Markarian scored both goals for Fisher on the day, giving her a College-record 20 for the year. Her first goal of the day came 12 minutes into the game, as she collected a rebound and scored in the empty net to put her team up 1-0 at the break.
Stevens (9-10) tied the game up five minutes into the second half, as Michaela Thompson muscled in a crossing-pass from Victoria Alvarez.
It would stay 1-1 for the remainder of regulation.
In the ninth minute of overtime,
Gabby LaForce sent Markarian on a breakaway with the junior dodging to the left and shooting the ball into the bottom-right corner to end the game.
For Fisher,
Ashley Maynard registered 12 saves to earn the win in goal.
