Komar And Saade Power Stevens Past Hartwick
HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 5, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team scored twice in the first half Saturday in a 2-1 win over Hartwick in the Empire 8 Championship Semifinal.
The win moved Stevens to 17-1, while Hartwick's season ended at 10-5-3.
Sophomore Zisi Koamr and freshman
Gabriella Saade each tallied Stevens goals, while seniors
Raba Nassif and
Gabby Mathelier chipped in with assists.
Stevens dominated possession with 26 shots to Hartwick's three, including an 11-1 margin in shots on goal. The Ducks also tallied four corners while not allowing any to the Hawks.
Komar wasted no time giving the Ducks the early lead with a goal off Nassif's rebound less than two minutes in, before Saade made it 2-0 three minutes later off an assist from Mathelier.
Nassif threatened for more with two shots over the next five minutes, but each attempt went over the pipe before two chances from Komar midway through were saved by Hartwick kepper Megan McGillycuddy. Sophomore
Olivia Butera got into the shooting action in the 23rd minute, banging one off the post to narrowly miss the score.
Stevens continued to keep up the pressure late in the first and into the second, but Hartwick was able to stop each chance before breaking through with one of its own in the 64th.
The score would be all Stevens would allow the rest of the afternoon however as the Hawks registered just one more shot on goal the remainder of regulation to seal the Ducks win.
The Ducks will look to capture their second-straight Empire 8 title in tomorrow's final at 1 p.m.
