W&J awarded ECAC Division III Field Hockey Championship berth
DANBURY, Conn. -- After a 15-4 season and Empire 8 title game loss, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team has earned a bid to the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Field Hockey Championship field.
W&J earned the fourth seed in Region 1 and will travel to host No. 16 Alvernia (19-2) for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Second-seeded Muhlenberg (15-3) and third-seeded Albright (11-6) will square off in the other quarterfinal that evening at 7 p.m. Region 2 will featured FDU-Florham (14-7) hosting Marywood (12-7) and Kean (16-3) welcoming Manhattanville (11-7).
The semifinals and finals will take place on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 9-10 at the highest remaining seed after Wednesday's quarterfinals.
The invitation represents the second bid to the ECAC tournament for W&J, having also made an appearance at the 2007 edition after a 15-win season, which established the school record for wins in a season that was matched in 2010 and again this year.
W&J claimed second place in the regular season and championship tournaments of the Empire 8, while Alvernia was second in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth. Both of the Crusaders' losses came at the hands of No. 1 Messiah.
