Ithaca senior Sawyer Hitchcock placed 64th and Stevens Institute of Technology sophomore Greg Arabagian took 87th at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the host school for the championships
Hitchcock, making his second straight appearance at nationals and third overall, ran into some misfortune early on in the race. He was knocked down, along with 20 to 30 other runners, just 200 meters into the event, which forced him to play catch-up the rest of the way with injuries to his legs. By the 1,000-meter mark, Hitchcock sat in 158th overall, but maneuvered all the way up to 54th at the 7K mark. He would finish in 64th with a time of 25:17.7, which was just 15 seconds behind the final All-American spot.
Arabagian ran the 8K in 25:27.4, which is the second fastest time of his career. Arabagian also became the highest finisher in men's program history, surpassing Mike Cahill's 160
th place finish two years ago. The Morristown, N.J. native collected a pair of Empire 8 Conference runner of the week honors, and was the first place finisher at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational back in September.
