Ithaca Men’s Track & Field Claims Empire 8 Title

ITHACA, N.Y. –
The Ithaca College men's track & field team took the team title Empire 8 Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday at Glazer Arena. Ithaca totaled 121 points in a highly contested championship meet.

St. John Fisher was second in team standings with 98 points and Stevens was close behind with 95 points. Utica came in fourth (66), Nazareth took fifth (64) and Alfred was sixth with 19 points.

Fisher's Mark VanMarter was named as the Field Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. The sophomore earned 18 points on the day, winning the long jump at 6.85 meters, while taking second in the high jump (1.98 meters).

Utica's Nicodemus Gambill earned the Male Athlete of the meet honors on Saturday after winning and breaking the meet record in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Gambill's 60-meter dash time of 6.91 is good enough for seventh in the nation while his 200-meter dash time of 22.22 is good enough for sixth in the nation.

Ithaca senior Andrew Brandt tied the Empire 8 record with a cleared height of 2.03 meters in the high jump to earn 10 points with a first place finish.

Senior Sawyer Hitchcock established a new facility record in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:11.92 to win the event by nearly four seconds.

The distance medley relay team topped the field by 10 seconds with a time of 10:34.70. Ithaca was represented by seniors Larkin Bohanan and John Fausold, and juniors Chris Gutierrez and Sean Phillips.

Phillips also entered to mile run and took second in a time of 4:21.86, while junior Brendan Davis placed sixth in 4:23.88.

Senior Aaron Matthias was runner-up in the 200-meter dash at 22.41 seconds and a third place performer in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.17 seconds, but ran a time of 7.02 seconds in the prelims. Matthias also competed in the long jump and came in third at 6.69 meters

In the pole vault, Ithaca claimed four of the top six positions. Sophomore David Dorsey was the runner-up with a cleared height of 4.05 meters, junior Dan Drill finished fourth at 3.90 meters, followed by junior Tyler Denn-Thiele at the same height. Abbott and freshman Lee Matthews tied for sixth at 3.75 meters.

Fisher's Peter Girardi won the 60-meter hurdles, setting a new Fisher record with a time of 8.22 seconds. Girardi also placed fourth overall in the 200. Senior Brandon Fuentes tallied 18 points on the day, finishing second in both the long jump and triple jump, while earning two more points with a fifth-place finish in the 60.

Senior Joe D'Agostino earned six points for the Cardinals, finishing fourth in the 60 and fifth in the 200.

Bryan Rollins and Ryan McQuillen combined to earn 10 points in the long jump, finishing third and fourth, respectively. McQuillen also finished sixth in the triple jump. Senior Kyle Koehler took second in the shot put, while freshman Ross Mathewson was fifth overall in the weight throw.

Utica's Shane Ruffing placed first in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 14.12 meters. The jump moves him into 16th in the nation in the triple jump. Ruffing also placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.54.

Nazareth's Nick LaBarberaMatt BattagliaMichael-Jordan Morris and Tom Sippie picked up right where they left off last week in the 4 x 400-meter relay.  After setting the school record a week ago in a time of 3:23.74, the quartet came back with a meet record of 3:21.72, nearly four seconds ahead of second place Ithaca.

Sippie earned 10 points for Nazareth with a new facility record of 49.04 in the 400-meter dash, followed closely in second place by teammate Nick LaBarbera who ran a 49.61.  Sippie was also sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.19), while LaBarbera was ninth (23.55).

The Golden Flyers also were able to heavily rely on their throwing crew for the field events.  Luis Rivera, who set the facility record last week in the weight throw, took home top honors with a toss of 18.84 meters (61' 9.75'').

Stevens freshman Andy Accardi took home first in the pole vault. Accardi reached 4.20m, besting his closest opponents by .15m. Junior Nicholas Zickgraf took home first place in the mile with a time of 4:18.83 and finished second in the 800.  Senior Kristopher Alvarez set a school-record in the 60-meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 8.39.  Senior Shane Chiaravalle collected a third place time of 22.46 in the 200, which also broke the school record. 

Alfred senior Ian Bishop earned himself a first place win in the shot put. His toss was 9.75 inches farther than the rest of the 25-athlete field with a final throw of 14.88m (48' – 10.00").  Fellow thrower, Jeffery Nunez placed second in the weight throw with his throw of 15.18m (49' – 9.75").

Houghton's 4x200m relay team of Cory McCarty, John Zamites, Austin Andryshak, and Chris Roe came in second with a time of 1:37.46.  McCarty also ran the 800m, finishing 7th in a season-best mark of 1:59.91.
