UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's basketball team continues to make waves in the news as its buzz-beater victory over Elmira College is being nominated for the GEICO Best of College Basketball 2016 Play of the Year. With 1.3 seconds remaining on the game clock Utica College's
Mike Cannizzo (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) hurled an overhand pass across center court to senior,
Robert Tutein (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet), who collected the pass and converted on an acrobatic 3-pointer with a defender in his face to lift Utica to a 75-74 buzzer beater victory over host Elmira College in Empire 8 Conference action.
Since the start of February, there have been four amazing college basketball plays nominated each week to be finalists for the GEICO Play of the Year 2016 compeition. Each week voters will have the opportunity to vote at
https://www.facebook.com/BestofCollegeBasketball/app/600098416787472/ and decide the best out of the four plays. The vote begins at the beginning of the week on Monday at 12 p.m. and voting closes at 11:59 a.m. the following week.
The five weekly winners will compete in the final week which will be a week-long competition for people to vote and determine the GEICO Play of the Year. The winner will then be announced during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special which airs on March 27
th at 12:00 p.m. on CBS.
Rob Tutein (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet)'s game-winning buzzer-beater will be nominated and open to vote today at 12:00 p.m. until February 22
nd at 11:59 a.m.
The night of the game against Elmira, Tutein's game-winner aired nationally on ESPN as a trio of great buzzer-beaters at 9 p.m. It later aired on SportsCenter as the No. 2 play of on the popular segment Top Ten Plays on Friday night and Saturday morning. The play has been posted on the Utica College Pioneers Facebook page, where it has over 18,000 views.
Tutein is the leading scoring for the Pioneers and ranks sixth in the Empire 8 Conference averaging 17.5 points per game in 20 games this season. He has made 57 three-pointers so far and ranks seventh in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.399). Tutein is currently fifth on the College's all-time three-pointers made list with 143.
The Pioneers will wrap up the regular season this weekend on the road. On Friday they travel to face conference opponent Ithaca College, who they beat earlier in the season 84-72. The following day Utica will finish the season against conference opponent Nazareth College, who they lost to 79-50.
