Stevens Tops Swarthmore In Marathon Match
EDGEWATER, N J. (February 24, 2016) - The No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles Wednesday in a 5-4, over four hour thrilling win over No. 31 Swarthmore College.
The win moved Stevens to 3-2, while Swarthmore fell to 0-1. The match ended just after 11 p.m. after starting at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Seniors
Matthew Heinrich and
Ben Foran got the Ducks an early point with an 8-5 win at first doubles to move their season record to 3-0. The duo broke a 1-1 tie and held a two point lead throughout the remainder of the match to seal the win.
Swarthmore answered back however with an 8-5 win at No. 3, before taking the lead with a tiebreaker 9-7 win at No. 2.
Sophomore
Kyle Henry provided the Ducks response in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5, followed by Foran's 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4. The win extended Foran's record to 3-0 at singles this spring, and moved his overall record to an unbeaten 7-0.
Drake followed suit with a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 to put the Ducks up 4-2, but Swathmore inched closer after a straight set win at No. 2 before tying the match in a three-set thriller at No. 1.
The match came down to No. 6 where sophomore
William Persson overcame a first set loss before taking the third after Swarthmore's Josh Powell was forced to withdraw due to cramping. Persson was up 2-0 in the third set.
The Ducks will be back in action Sunday against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 12:45 p.m. at Binghamton Racquet Club.
