Battaglia Wins 800-Meter Run At NYSCTC Championships

ITHACA, NY – Matt Battaglia won the 800-meter run to highlight the day, as the track and field squads concluded the final day of the NYSCTC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Ithaca's Athletics and Events Center.

Battaglia ripped off a 1:55.35 to set the facility record and take first place.  Jacob Murray nearly picked up points in the 800 as well, running 2:00.35 to finish ninth.

The men's team finished eighth with 48 points and the women took seventh with 31 points.  Rochester won on the men's side with 139 points and Ithaca ran away with the title for the women with 216.45 points.

Tom Sippie was just edged out in the 400-meter dash as he clocked a 48.91, while Nicholas Crawford of St. Lawrence came in at 48.88.  Sippie, along with Crawford, set the Ithaca facility record in the process.  Nick LaBarbera took third in the event with a 49.63.

Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay of Sippie, LaBarbera, Battaglia, and Michael-Jordan Morris came up just short, with a time of 3:21.44, just .12 seconds behind first place St. Lawrence.  The quartet smashed the school record by over two seconds. 

Also competing for Nazareth was Morris in the 60-meter hurdles as he took eighth place (9.37).

On the women's side, Samantha Goble had the best finish, earning second in the 800-meter run.  She turned in a 2:18.36.

Equally as impressive was Amanda Entress, who took second in the triple jump in an ECAC qualifying mark of 10.93 meters.

In other field action, Emily Soeder picked up fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 1.53 meters (5 feet, ¼ inches).

Andrea Larnard took home eighth in the 500-meter run, while Emily Thompson was just left of the podium in the 3,000, clocking 10:47.82 for ninth.

Larnard, Goble, Gabrielle LeBihan, and Eileen Shea edged out St. John Fisher's 4 x 800 relay with a time of 9:58.41, good for fifth place.  The Cardinals were sixth in 9:59.60. 

Individuals that have qualified for ECACs will compete next weekend at Ocean Breeze, located in Staten Island, NY.
