The Empire 8 crowned champions in men's and women's basketball and we got a sneak peak at some spring like weather last week which was ideal for teams competing up north while others opened their spring campaigns down south. Those earning weekly honors for the week of Feb. 22-28, 2016 include...

Men's Basketball Player - Hartwick
Jake Sinicki, Sophomore, Forward – Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell

 
Jake Sinicki was named the tournament MVP as he averaged 20 points, nine rebounds and 3.5 blocks. He shot 60.9 percent from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line.  In the semifinal game Sinicki scored 14 points, had a team-high 14 rebounds and had a game-high five blocks.  In the championship game, he had 21 first half points for the Hawks, connecting on 8-of-9 shots. He finished with a team-high 26 points as he shot 9-of-14 in the game with four rebounds, a trio of three-pointers, two assists, and two blocks.
 
Men's Basketball Rookie - Nazareth
Tyler Stenglein, Sophomore, Guard – Rochester, NY/Irondequoit

 
Tyler Stenglein, named the Empire 8 Rookie of the year last week, earns the weekly award for the sixth time this season.  The sophomore guard poured in 17 points (8-of-16) and grabbed six rebounds in Nazareth's 75-69 loss to Hartwick College in the Empire 8 semifinals on Friday.
 
Women's Basketball Player - Stevens
Megan Brown, Sophomore, Forward – Laurel, MD/Laurel

 
Megan Brown was named the E8 Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player, averaging 15 points and 9 rebounds over the two games. Brown scored a career-best 19 points and hauled in seven rebounds against Nazareth. She followed that up with an 11 point, 11 rebound performance in the Championship game against Ithaca marking her eighth double-double of the season.
 
Women’s Basketball Rookie –  No Nominations
 
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete –  Nazareth
Matt Battaglia, Junior – Syracuse, NY/Solvay
 
Matt Battaglia won the 800-meter run at the NYSCTC Championships in a facility record time of 1:55.35. He was also on Nazareth's 4 x 400 relay squad which set the school record and finished second in 3:21.44.
 
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete –  Ithaca
Andrew Brandt, Senior – Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown
 
Senior Andrew Brandt set a new facility and school record in the high jump with a cleared height of 2.10 meters and finished first overall at the NYSCTC Indoor Championships at Ithaca. Brandt broke the school record that stood since 1986.
 
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete –  Stevens
Amy Regan, Senior – Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills
 
Amy Regan was fourth in the mile at the Fastrack Last Chance meet Saturday, recording a time of 4:51.32. The time is currently the fastest in Division III this season, and set the school record. The previous best time for the current season was 4:59.97.
 
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete –  Ithaca
Katherine Pitman, Junior – Swampscott, MA/Swampscott
 
Junior Katherine Pitman took first in the pole vault at the NYSCTC Championships and set a new school, meet and facility record in the process. Pitman ranks second in the nation with a mark of 4.07 meters. She helped Ithaca win its 15th state title with 216.5 points.
 
Baseball Player –  Stevens
Jayson Yano, Senior, IF – Foothill Ranch, CA/El Toro
 
Jason Yano batted .500 (5-for-10) in a pair of games over the weekend. In a loss to William Paterson, he went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base. He also started that game on the mound, tossing six shutout innings with four strikeouts and allowing only three hits. On Sunday in a win over Drew, Yano went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
 
Baseball Pitcher –  St. John Fisher
Dominick Pisciotto, Junior, P – Morristown, NJ/Morristown
 
Dominick Pisciotto started on the mound for Fisher against Franklin College and helped the Cardinals pick up its first win of the 2016 season. Pisciotto pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out 10 batters.
 
Softball Player –  Houghton
Taylor Sile, Freshman, 3B/P – Hilton, NY/Hilton
 
Taylor Sile batted .387 (12-for-31) as Houghton finished 5-5 during a week in Clermont, FL. Sile registered seven RBIs, hit two doubles and two triples, scored eight runs and walked four times. During the 10 game stretch she had three multi hit games including a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI against Lyndon State on Feb. 26.
 
Softball Pitcher –  Houghton
Taylor Sile, Freshman, P – Hilton, NY/Hilton
 
Taylor Sile made seven appearances in the circle during Houghton’s trip to Clermont, FL. She finished the week with 3-3 record and one save. Sile recorded an ERA of 3.88 with 24 strikeouts over 30.2 innings.
 
Men’s Lacrosse Player –  Stevens
Andrew Scrutchfield, Senior, Attack – Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen
 
Andrew Scrutchfield scored three goals, including the game-winning tally in overtime, to lead the Ducks to a 16-15 win over No. 19 Endicott College Sunday. Scrutchfield also collected a pair of assists, six ground balls and fired nine shots in the win.
 
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie –  Alfred
Drew Gardner, Sophomore – Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point
 
Drew Gardner picked up his second win of the season in a 10-6 decision against The College at Brockport. Gardner spent the entire game in goal for Alfred, making 16 saves, a career-high. His previous personal best (14) came a year ago against Brockport. In addition, he assisted on the Saxons ninth goal of the game.

Men’s Tennis Player–  Ithaca
Michael Gardiner, Freshman – New York, NY/Beacon
 
Freshman Michael Gardiner rallied for a big win at first singles and contributed a win at second doubles as the Ithaca College men’s tennis team beat St. Lawrence 6-3 on Saturday to move to 2-0 on the season. ??Down 5-2 in the third set of the first singles match, Gardiner fought off four match balls and won five straight games to come out victorious and move the momentum in Ithaca's direction. He also teamed with senior Chris Hayes for an 8-5 win at second doubles. The duo trailed 5-3 before winning the final five games to pull out the win.
