Alfred cracks win column with win at Pitt-Bradford

The Alfred University men's tennis team earned its first win of the 2015-16 season, 8-1, at Pitt-Bradford Sunday evening.
 
The Saxons swept doubles play and won five of six singles matches to improve to 1-6 on the season. In first doubles, seniors Connor Doud (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Matt Baloga (Goshen, NY/Goshen) claimed an 8-1 win. Junior Patrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) and senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) won second doubles, 8-2, while freshman Kyle Kemper (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and junior Kyle Merrifield (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) took third doubles, 8-3.
 
In singles play, Doud won first singles when his opponent retired; Baloga won third singles, 8-0; Volz took fourth singles, 8-6; Brown was victorious in fifth singles, 8-0; and freshman Sean Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker) won sixth singles, 8-2.

Earlier in the day Alfred dropped a close 5-4 decision to host Penn State-Behrend Sunday afternoon.
 
Alfred (0-6) split six singles matches. Senior Connor (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) won first singles, 5-7, 6-4, 10-2; senior Kevin Volz (Olean, NY/Olean) took fourth singles, 6-4, 6-1; and juniorPatrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) claimed a win in fifth singles, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
 
Doud and senior Matt Baloga (Goshen, NY/Goshen) won the Saxons' lone doubles match, taking first doubles 8-6.
 
The Saxons play next on their five-match Spring Break trip to Orlando, FL, March 6-8. They play Wittenberg March 6; University of Southwestern and Roger Williams March 7; and Cornell College and Ursinus March 8.
