Ithaca Takes Down St. Lawrence

Wes Davis, the Ithaca College men's tennis team beat St. Lawrence 6-3 on Saturday to move to 2-0 on the season.
Down 5-2 in the third set of the first singles match against St. Lawrence's Dean Sponholz, Gardiner fought off four match balls and won five straight games to come out victorious and move the momentum in Ithaca's direction.
The Bombers got off to a fast start in doubles play, as Davis and sophomore
Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos teamed up for an 8-5 victory over Paul Barrett and Elliot Solandt at first doubles. Hayes and Gardiner took the second doubles match over Sponholz and Robert Schmitz by the identical score of 8-5, but the duo trailed 5-3 before winning the final five games to pull out the win.
In the other singles matches, Hayes beat Rhonny Rosario 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in a tight match in the second flight. In a back-and-forth first set, Hayes led 5-3, then trailed 6-5. Hayes fought off three set points to force a tiebreaker that he won (7-5) before taking the second set to earn the win. Davis earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rob Schmitz at third singles, and Viguie-Ramos defeated Marco Amendola 7-6, 5-7, 10-5 at sixth singles.
Ithaca's next contest will be a dual match at Hobart on March 24 at 4 p.m.
