Njoku and Regan National Champs! Cordani and Wiatr All-Americans
RESULTS
GRINNELL, IOWA (March 12, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology seniors Gladys Njoku and Amy Regan picked up a National Championship title today; while Ithaca sophomore Taryn Cordani and Utica senior Sarah Wiatr became All-Americans.
Njoku defended her high jump title from a year ago and claimed this year's championship reaching a height of 1.75-meters. The 1.75 meters tied a season-best for Njoku, and was.3 centimeters better than the second place competitor.
Njoku and Olivia Jendrezewski of Lebanon Valley College each hit 1.72. When the bar was raised to 1.75, Jendrezewski did not clear it on any of her attempts. Njoku reached on her second attempt, handing her the crown.
Regan won her second National Championship at the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday, this time in the 3,000 meter. She captured the 5,000 meter National Championship yesterday, and today turned in one of her best performances in the 3,000 ever. The senior recorded a time of 9:30.80 which was not only the Bear Athletic Center record, but also broke the Division III Indoor Championship meet record. It was the second fastest 3K ever run in DIII history.
Despite sending only two athletes to the meet (Regan and Njoku), the Ducks finished fourth as a team with 30 points. The fourth place finish is the highest in program history, and the team finished just 12 points behind first place Baldwin Wallace College.
Cordani competed with Regan in the 3,000 meter and became an All-American with an eighth place finish. She set a new school record with a time of 9:42.85 and was just 2.84 seconds from placing third overall.
Wiatr earned a fourth place finish and All-American status in the triple jump. Wiatr advanced to the finals with a jump of 11.86 meters in her final attempt of the preliminaries and then she broke the school-record in her last attempt in the finals by posting a jump of 12.01 meters to earn her second career All-American honor.
