Regan Named USTFCCCA Track Athlete Of The Year
NEW ORLEANS (March 17, 2016) – Senior
Amy Regan of the Stevens Institute of Technology was named
United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Track Athlete of the Year Thursday.
"I am really honored to be recognized as the National Athlete of the Year," Regan said. "My successes throughout the season are reflective of the great coaching and support I received from Stevens. I am looking forward to Spring track and bringing this positive momentum outdoors."
It is the second national honor for Regan, as last year she was named USTFCCCA Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
Regan capped off an outstanding senior campaign by winning a pair of National Championships at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend. The senior took home titles in the 5,000 meter and the 3,000 meter.
During the 5,000, Regan jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, finishing nine seconds better than second place with a mark of 16:48.62. Regan ran a meet record 9:30.80 in the 3K, finishing seven seconds than her previous season-best.
In early February, Regan ran the second fastest time in Division III history in the 5K at the Armory Invitational. Her time of 16:23.4 was better than Division I athletes from Mississippi State University, Vanderbilt University and University of Wisconsin.
"Amy may have made it look easy this past weekend but she had worked incredibly hard to prepare herself," Head Coach
Justin Wood said. "On top of that, she executed her race strategies perfectly to win the races. I think it's a great honor for her to be recognized for these incredible performances last weekend. No one deserves it more."
