Heinrich Wins Twice In No. 25 Stevens’ Falls To No. 22 Tufts
CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 22, 2016) – Senior
Matthew Heinrich picked-up wins at both first singles and doubles Tuesday in No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis' 6-3 loss to No. 22 Tufts University.
The loss dropped Stevens to 5-4, while Tufts moved to 4-0.
Along with senior
Ben Foran, No. 18 Heinrich/Foran grabbed the early lead for the Ducks with an 8-2 win at first doubles over Rohan Gupte and Nick Cary. The win kept the Stevens double aces undefeated this season at 6-0, all from the top doubles spot.
Sophomores
Danny Polk and
Kyle Henry made it two straight with their 8-5 win at No. 2, but Tufts responded with an 8-5 win at No. 3 to cut the Stevens lead in half.
Foran retired early at third singles to tie the match at two, before Tufts captured wins at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles to seal the win. Heinrich brought the Ducks closer with a win at No. 1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, but Tufts responded with a win at No. 2 to clinch the 6-3 decision.
The win for Heinrich was his fourth of the season at singles, all of which have come at No. 1.
The Ducks will take Wednesday off before returning on Thursday for a matchup with No. 11 Bowdoin College.
