No. 11 Bowdoin Tops No. 25 Stevens In California
CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 22, 2016) – Senior
Matthew Heinrich picked-up a win over a nationally-ranked singles opponent for the No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team Thursday, but the Ducks fell in the match to No. 11 Bowdoin College 8-1.
The loss dropped Stevens to 5-5, while Bowdoin moved to 6-0.
Matched-up at first singles, No. 11 Heinrich grabbed the first set 6-3 over No. 10 Luke Tercek, before taking the second 6-2 to seal the straight-set win. The victory was the sixth of the season for Heinrich at first singles, moving his spring record to 6-1.
Bowdoin grabbed control of the match early on after a sweep at doubles, including a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 1 over Heinrich and senior
Ben Foran.
The Polar Bears were able to maintain control once singles started with straight-set wins at sixth, fourth and fifth. Sophomore
Danny Polk fought-back after a first-set loss to take the second 6-4, but fell in the third in a tiebreaker 10-8.
The Ducks will conclude their spring break trip tomorrow with a match against No. 8 Pomona Pitzer at 1 p.m. (EST).
