Solid Start For Track Teams At Day One Of ECACs

RESULTS

Empire 8 men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed on Friday at the first day of the ECAC Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

ALFRED
Alfred University sophomore Seth Spicer won the shot put in the men's heptathlon on Friday. Spicer's winning throw in the shot put was a personal-best 12.47 meters. He took sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.51 seconds), eighth in the long jump (6.01 meters), and 10th in the high jump (1.70 meters). Fourteen athletes are competing in the heptathlon, which concludes today with the pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and 1,000-meter run.
 
AU senior Ian Bishop also competed for the Saxons Friday, finishing 14th in the shot put (14.67 meters).
 
ITHACA
Junior Brandy Smith of the women's team highlighted the first day of competition with a second place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.17 meters.

Two Bombers took fifth in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Sawyer Hitchcock clocked a time of 14:56.34 for the men, while sophomore Denise Ibarra completed the race in 18:00.86.

The women's distance medley relay team of seniors Rachelle Sartori and Michaela Cioffredi, and juniors Colleen Smith and Kristin Lynn placed seventh at 12:39.30.

Ithaca's women's 4x200-meter relay ran a time of 1:46.32. The squad consisted of a quartet of seniors – Eliza DewartLizzi DowlingChristine Kelly and Emily Williams.

Senior De'Marquis Malone measured out 13.63 meters in the triple jump to come in eighth overall.

Sophomore Brianna Hayes recorded three top six finishes in the pentathlon on Friday. Hayes' best performance came in the high jump as she tied for second with a mark of 1.55 meters. She also took fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.74 and sixth in the shot put at 9.06 meters.

ST. JOHN FISHER
Sammy Van Gee placed fourth overall in the 5,000, setting a new Fisher record with a time of 18:00.86. Fisher's distance medley relay of Juliette Miller, Sydney Saccone, Kaitlin Rizzo and Sarah Coon placed ninth overall, just missing the medal stand.

On the men's side, Kyle Koehler placed sixth overall in the shot put. Fisher's 4X200 relay team of Joe D'Agostino, Noah Murray, Trevor Wilkes and Peter Girardi helped set a new Fisher record with a time of 1:30.46, placing seventh overall.

Girardi also qualified for the finals on Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles.

Fisher's distance medley relay team (James Felice, Tyler Wilkie, Jack Behlmaier and McQuade Milligan) also reached the medal stand, placing sixth overall.

UTICA
Sarah Wiatr (Poland, NY/West Canada Valley) placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 11.65 meters. Keanu Heedram placed 18th in the shot put with a throw of 14.43 meters while Sam Kaczmarek placed 24th (13.34m). Freshman Kyle Swiecki competed in the Heptathlon and placed 11th in the 60m dash, tied for eighth in the high jump, placed fourth in the long jump, and 12th in the shot put. The Heptathlon will be completed tomorrow.
 
Nicodemus Gambill placed first in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 6.92 and will compete tomorrow in the finals. Shane Ruffing had a season best 8.46 in the 60m hurdles and placed 11th. The men's distance medley relay consisting of Tyler Sutton, Kevin Gangemi, Erik Winberg, and Tyler Wright placed eighth with a time of 10:25.30 while the women's distance medley relay consisting of Kaitlyn Phillips (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane)Jenessa McCabe(Bedford, MA/Bedford High School)Brooke Catalano (West Islip, NY/West Islip High School), and Renee Lewis (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) finished 11th (12:51.25). The men's 4x200m relay made up of Kyle Carr, Benjamin Smith, Christian St. Amour, and Nickolas Williams placed 20th with a time of 1:33.37.
